Vincent van The Painter and the Portrait, produced in conjunction with the international loan exhibition Van Face to Face, explores the artist's changing conception of the portrait from his first experiments with drawing character studies around 1880 to his astonishing explorations of expressive color at the end of the decade. Illustrated with more than 50 color plates, the text incorporates selections from van Gogh's extraordinary letters, bringing the artist's singular vision of portraiture to life. This collection features portraits of the artist, his friends, neighbors, family, and other figures from his daily life offering the reader an opportunity to see inside van Gogh's world, so passionately evoked in his canvases.
To the point and precise as its title. This book is an essay on Van Gogh and the portraits he painted in his time as an artist. The descriptions and explanation of the portraits are adequate. Periods of his life is described in sequence with the chronology of the paintings. Perhaps more could be explained on the relationships with the subjects of the portraits and Vincent himself.
