Fast, funny, and noir-ish. Leon Ferrara is a small-time crook, pick-pocketing people around Buenos Aires, living a quiet life. Three peculiar foreigners enter his life asking him to perform a mission to them and the story lifts off. International agents, mafia, everyday people, a hero-like police officer and his corrupted counterpart, two very weird brothers, tango dancers, world-war II survivors are all entangled in this captivating story that is intermittent by the internal thought of a lion that escaped the zoo wandering around the city realising what a peculiar animal are the humans. Sampayo is using the lion in a splendid way to analyse social aspects of the urban environment and the human behaviour. Although simple, the writing style engages the reader without boring them while at the same time transfer the atmosphere of underground Buenos Aires.
Bottom-line: A nice novel with great ambience that will make you laugh!
