A guide for buyers of custom-built homes reveals common problems in home design, relates how to create a user-friendly home, and discusses how to get the best out of a builder or contractor
I found about this book while reading an online forum about what people wished they had done while building their home. I was hoping to purchase the newer version, Better Houses, Better Living, from Amazon, but they were on backorder. So I checked this one out in the mean time to help me during our house planning stage. What fabulous insight and suggestions Myron Ferguson makes. He helps the reader mentally walk through how you will use your house, and how to plan for functional aspects in your home. I changed several small details just to make our house easier to use because of these ideas. Also, I feel much better informed and prepared to jump into the building process. For anyone who is looking to build a house, this is a must read!
This was an okay book and discussed common sense things hat maybe people don't know they need to think about in a home. There should be enough electrical outlets and places where you need them. Outlet near water need to be GFI. Have switches in convenient places. Door's shouldn't open into each other. I was looking more for information about structure - soils, foundations, mechanical systems and such. That is beyond the scope of this book, but it's good for those surface issues.
