An excellent re-telling of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic by Alan MacDonald. Although written ostensibly for a younger readership, this edition retains all the suspense and horror of the dual personality of Dr Henry Jekyll and the evil Mr Edward Hyde.

Lawyer Mr Utterson is confused, not to say suspicious, when he receives Henry Jekyll's will and it states, 'In the case of my disappearance or unexplained absence for a period of more than three months, I wish that Edward Hyde shall step into my shoes without further delay.'

Utterson does not know Hyde and has never met him so when he meets his friend Richard Enfield for a drink he is surprised when he is told a tale about an incident involving the knocking down of a child and that the person who caused the trouble was called Edward Hyde.

He tries to get to the bottom of the matter but meets with much resistance from Jekyll who rebuffs him to such an extent that their friendship is temporarily broken. Meanwhile Jekyll, by the clever use of chemicals, metamorphoses into Hyde on a variety of occasions and manages to keep the dark secret away from his household servants.

Then a murder is committed and Jekyll realises that, as Hyde, he is the perpetrator. Events take a turn for the worse and as things begin to get out of hand Utterson, along with his friend Doctor Hastie Lanyon, investigates by calling on Jekyll but he is not home. However, Jekyll's manservant Poole breaks down Jekyll's laboratory door in an effort to see what is happening. That action only confuses the matter as the place is in turmoil. So Utterson is no nearer solving the mystery.

Meanwhile Hyde at his secret residence in Soho is finding it more and more difficult to complete the metamorphosis back to Jekyll. This all leads to his downfall and, after more painful moments for Jekyll and Hyde, the issue is eventually resolved by a confession by Henry Jekyll.

Throughout the tale the suspense is maintained with letters being passed between Utterson and Jekyll and the seamless way in which Jekyll and Hyde interchange without giving away any evidence of such behaviour. Robert Louis Stevenson would have been proud of the way the story has been adapted.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
The book Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is about one person who can convert into another different person by drinking a potion. The real man’s name is Dr. Jekyll and he transforms himself into Edward Hyde. Utterson, Jekyll’s best friend didn’t know anything about him being another person. His friend had to do a lot of searching about why did Jekyll disappear for days. At the beginning of the story, Jekyll wanted to give all his money to Edward but nobody knew that he was the same person. Utterson had found three letters that said to Utterson grad a potion and someone in the evening will go and picked up. He was waiting till evening when someone knocks the door he was kinda scared of what could happen. The man asked Utterson for the potion, he told the man that what happens when someone drinks the potion.
The man said, “I can show you, or you can just go and see me after I’ve drank the potion.”
“I’ll stay,” Utterson replied.
The man drank the potion and he was screaming and changing his body into Dr. Jekyll. Utterson was so scared and surprised at the same time. He could sleep no more thinking about that night. in the end, Jekyll could just drink the potion and convert to Hyde. When he was on Hyde’s body he will do evil things, and he killed a man too.
I like this book because it is about one person that can transform into another different person. You can learn how he did a lot of evil things and now his paying for everything he did. I recommend this book to the ninth graders because this book it’s interesting to find out that he was the same person when nobody knew.
