He sees me, but he won’t let me in. Sometimes if you what something, you have to take it. That’s what I do with Levi. He is everything I want wrapped in one grumpy package and I am determined to unwrap each layer until he lets me in. When my past resurfaces and his nightmares come to life, will we survive?
This is a DARK ROMANCE with HEAVY triggers. Reader's Discretion is HIGHLY advised.
*This is book 2 in The Breaking Point Series. Please read "A Piece Too A Dark Billionaire Romance" BEFORE reading this story.
Emily Klepp is a Western North Carolina native residing in eastern Tennessee with her loving husband and two beautiful children. She has been writing since she was fourteen years old as a way to cope with her anxiety. She hopes to help others be able to speak their truth by writing about topics that are considered too taboo for societal norms.
A quick spicy book to follow up A Piece Too Far (Book 1 of the series). This story deals with Levi and Arden's painful past experiences and how they help each other heal. Emily loves writing raw, deep and ugly trauma that always makes me want to cry.
A Step Too Close is book 2 in the Breaking Point Series (A dark romance novella series). All the books are need to be read in order.
Following on from A Piece too Far, A Step too Close where we get Arden and Levi’s story, we learn about their past and how they come together, supporting each other through their trauma. What happens to her ex?
Once again, I loved this, the fact it follows on in the breaking point series helps as you know the characters. For me Emily’s writing just keeps me reading, the spice is always spicing 🌶️ and the feels for the MCs makes you love them more.
I‘m not really sure about this book, I really liked the previous voulme from this series but here I had some difficulties. Don’t get me wrong I really liked the characters and their backstories are heartbreaking but I think their trauma handling could have been better here. Especially as Arden got raped anally by her ex-boyfriend and then soon after had Anal sex with Levi. However this novella definitely delivered when it came to the dark themes and I loved the wicked way they took Caleb (Arden’s ex-boyfriend) down.

I loved Arden and Levi in the first book and couldn’t wait for their story. Not gonna lie I wasn’t expecting what I got.
I knew that Levi had trauma but I didn’t realise just how much. No wonder that man turned to drink.
As for Arden I was sad reading about what happened to her. It explained so much to why she was adamant that Wilder get justice from what happened with Tina. To be fair I did know that something else was gonna happen just not what. There was to many pages of the book left for them to get their HEA.
I left a little sad that Levi was left behind to look after the girls but I understood why. I’m just glad that Arden had Wilder and Jett in her corner.
Ahhhhhhh my hearrrrt!! I really do love a dark traumance, where both the MMC and the FMC have each gone through their own separate trauma. And this was true for Arden and Levi, who despite having feelings for eachother and trying to deny them, can't help their attraction as they fall one step closer after another, not only blossoming as a couple but helping eachother heal in a glorious and unhinged way.
This was so good I was so excited to read Arden's story after meeting her in the first book. I am so glad these two characters got to be happy together, my heart was hurting for them throughout this book. they jumped in head first and didn't care what others thought. The healing they found together was so amazing. I am never disappointed with Emily Klepp books I know they will be so good and fast paced. This series was a favorite so far
This one put me in my feels. I have cried and smiled throughout this book and loved every minute of it! I am so happy they both got the ending they deserved.
In this book, we get the continuation of the relationship between Levi & Arden. We met them briefly in book #1.
Both Arden and Levi have had trauma in their lives and when Arden's ex makes an appearance while his acts against her cause further trauma her brother, Levi & his brother as well as her best friend, Macie are there for her to help her heal and to find the sweet revenge she desires.
This is the second book in the Breaking Point Series that follows Arden and Levi. I loved Arden in the first book so I enjoyed seeing a whole book for her character. It was nice also seeing Wilder and Macie pop back up & play an important role in this book. I didn’t like Caleb but I am glad he got what was coming for him. The relationship between Arden & Levi developed quickly but it was good to see how much they cared for each other and were there for each other to overcome the trauma they went through. The ending was perfect with the symbolism of the name of the soon to be child.
Arden was sassy in the first book and i loced learning more about her! Levis story broke me, and almost had me crying 😭 I instantly fell in love with him! The banter between arden and levi was amazing and probably my favorite party of the story! Caleb that bastard got what was coming to him too😤
This was the second book in the breaking point series excited to see who we learn about next!
Read your trigger warnings Second book in The Breaking Point Series From jump I’m in love with Levi. His past broke me 😩😩. I love getting to see more of Arden, because I LOVED her sass and wit in “A piece too far”. Watching the story unfold with Levi and Arden made my little heart flutter 😍. Too know Arden’s past as well makes me know they are perfect for each other. This one definitely sheds light on SA and getting the justice you deserve and to not be ignored by the people who should help you get justice. The spice is spicy and whoaaa it’s insta love🌶️😮💨😍👏🏻
Arden has been working with Levi to become a PI for the last few months after getting his help for a case involving her brother Wilder. They both have suffered trauma that the other knows nothing about but soon they work to help each other heal. This was such a good follow up to A piece to far. I love being able to see more of the characters even after their main story is over. Levi’s back story was so heartbreaking and Emily made it come to life in the way that all great authors do. Another book I highly recommend!
⭐️ 4.5/5 stars –This one absolutely demolished me in the best way. Grumpy PI, chaotic badass heroine, trauma, healing, and spice that will straight-up melt your face off. I devoured it.
🌶️ 4.5/ 5 Spice Rating – It’s rough, it’s filthy, it’s intense—and it is emotionally loaded in the best way. Once they finally give in, it’s desk-breaking and mind-melting. We’re talking praise, possessiveness, and a little “I’m gonna put a baby in you” energy—but with real trust and some solid aftercare. Oh—and they move into a free-use dynamic, so buckle up. It’s not fade-to-black. It’s “rip your panties off in the middle of a panic attack to calm you down” hot.
🖤 5/5 Darkness Rating – Check trigger warnings. This one packs a punch and will knock you into the dark. Everything is very detailed and on page. Definitely check the full list on the author’s website if you’re unsure—your mental health matters.
⸻ What I Loved:
This book had me hooked. The private investigator dynamic was such a fun twist—grumpy, emotionally-walled-off Levi paired with a determined, bratty firecracker like Arden? Perfection. What really stood out, though, was how Emily Klepp handled the heavy trauma. She doesn’t shy away from the dark stuff, but she balances it beautifully with healing, emotional growth, and mental health care. Somehow, it’s gut-wrenching, spicy, and comforting all at once—and I loved every chaotic, heart-pounding second of it.
⸻ The Story (No Spoilers!):
Okay, so this one follows a badass girl trying to break into the PI world, and the grumpy, emotionally walled-off guy who finally lets her in—professionally and emotionally (eventually). There’s a slow-burn, tension-filled dynamic between them, layered with trauma, healing, and just enough danger to keep your heart racing. It’s dark, it’s messy, it’s real—and underneath all of that? So much heart. You’ll root for them, cry with them, and probably fan yourself a lot.
⸻ Final thoughts:
This book hit hard in all the right ways. It’s dark and emotional, but never hopeless. The healing arc? Chef’s kiss. The spice? Unholy. And the way it tackles trauma while still giving us swoony moments and that warm, safe “you’re allowed to fall apart” love? Ugh, perfection. Emily Klepp doesn’t sugarcoat a damn thing—and that’s exactly what makes this story so powerful.
There are some MAJOR triggers in this one. Definitely check the full list on the author’s website if you’re unsure—your mental health matters.
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for my honest review. And honestly? I am unwell.
I’ve come to really enjoy this series. They discuss some seriously dark themes and things that can be very triggering, so please check the trigger warning. This book, much like the previous book, gives a very accurate look at how SA can affect anyone and everyone differently. This book had two people that were enduring do to past trauma. The confided in each other and were able to start on their healing journey. This is a very short story, but it definitely packs a punch. It does link to the previous story, but it isn’t necessary to have read it. This book has some very dark things that are talked about between the main characters.
These two characters were so fantastic. I loved how Levi was so understanding about what Arden went through after her traumatic event. Arden is the little sister of Wilder, the male main character in A Piece Too Far and in this book, we get to see so much more of Arden than just the little sister. She is a grown woman. She has drive and has turned her past trauma into something positive. I thought that I really liked her when she was helping Wilder in book one, but we get to see a whole new Arden. Levi has not had things easy either. He had to witness an even more traumatic event that would tear even some of the strongest people apart. This is absolutely a quick burn, with these two admitting their feelings for each other very soon into the book. Levi is able to be rough and dominant with Arden but also a sweet softy. These two are absolutely perfect for each other and you can feel the chemistry ignite between them. When they finally get together, these two have amazing intimate time that is spicy as heck.
One thing I really enjoy about this series is the way the author deals with SA victims. The scene when Arden is explaining what she went through after her ordeal is my absolute favorite. It points out that there is no right way to deal with SA trauma. Victims all process things differently and we need to be accepting of how they choose to cope. I just love these short stories that all connect with each other and how they really see things through the victim eyes. This has dealt with some very serious things, but I honestly think this is one of those stories that is worth reading if it doesn’t interact with your personal triggers.
A Step Too Close + A Moment Too Soon - Emily Klepp
5/5⭐️
📚📚📚 A Step Too Close- Arden and Levi these two just stole my whole damn heart when reading! After meeting them in book one and now learning their journey I’m just left speechless. The traumatic events that they both lived through had my mouth on the floor. I was crying at points and just so happy Arden and Levi found each other. Absolutely perfection. The way this little family cares for one another is just a whole new level but works for them. I so recommend adding this one to the tbr, just check your triggers first!
A Moment Too Soon- This one is another fast read but literally so unforgettable. Bex and Jett are another book couple i absolutely loved. These two best friends since forever but one time they tried more because Jett has never hid his feelings for Bex. Let’s just so everything that can go wrong did for these two and their time gets stolen from them. Garret is just straight trash and so glad they all got the revenge they deserved. Jerome HOT DAMN!! That was such a twist I wasn’t ready for but gosh I need more! Forever will be obsessed with this series and so recommend! Emily, you literally leave me speechless after every book…I don’t think I could ever pick a favorite!

Levi and Arden story had me in tears. Levi story is so tragic! He lose lbs his wife and daughter all right in front of him. Levi comes home wounded which makes him incapable of moving. His beautiful wife’s ex has been stalking her for forever. So one night he wakes up to screams and he can’t move because the ex ties him up and he is literally forced to watch them be r**ed both wife and little girl. And after that the ex offs himself. Poor Levi is left with feeling guilty for not saving them and becomes a drunk. But at the same time he starts P.I. Company. Then you have Arden who is being stalked by someone. Arden went to the police and no believed her. Levi gives a speech at her school and she goes in every day to see if he’d take on an assistant. He tells her no but she won’t stop (big brat vibes) till she breaks him down. And when she finally does that’s when everything falls in line for them. Both of there families have no idea what has happened to them. So they basically force each other to confess to their families so their families can be there for them. And man when it all comes together it’s beautiful. This is book 2 in the series and it’s short but packed with so much plot and spice.
A Step Too Close was a quick, emotional, dark, and super spicy read! The plot had lots of twists and suspense that kept you hooked. The main characters have both been through so much, and the healing they do together is great to read about.
Arden is so strong for everything she’s been through and even though she was scared to get close to Levi, she couldn’t ignore or fight the pull she felt towards him. Once she revealed what had happened to her to him, she was accepted immediately and that was really healing for her. In the end she got her closure and found the happiness she deserved 🖤
Levi was closed off from Arden in the beginning, and it wasn’t hard to understand why after learning about his heartbreaking backstory. However, finding Arden and connecting with her turned his life around for the better. She helped him work through his trauma, and she was there for him. She especially showed how much she cared about his past at the end 🖤
This was a short and easy, though very dark & emotional read, filled with loads of spice. This book will keep you invested and wanting to know what’s going to happen next and how the character’s relationship is going to play out! Make sure to check your triggers before reading this 🖤
Levi and Arden are the focus of this book and the thing I love about this book is that it isn't just Arden with the trauma or Levi. That in fact both of them have a traumatic past and together they heal together they learn to grown and deal with their past. The family in this book is so supportive of both and help both Levi and Arden no questions ask to whatever level of help is needed. The support shown in this book is amazing. I love this book and how she manages to not only unpack the adventures of healing from our past, but yet add in a love story and spice. Another amazing read.
Blurb: He sees me, but he won’t let me in. Sometimes if you what something, you have to take it. That’s what I do with Levi. He is everything I want wrapped in one grumpy package and I am determined to unwrap each layer until he lets me in. When my past resurfaces and his nightmares come to life, will we survive?

*This is book 2 in The Breaking Point Series. Please read "A Piece Too A Dark Billionaire Romance" BEFORE reading this story.
Trauma does a lot to a person, even when they move on in their life it will always haunt them. People handle it differently and it’s okay as long as it is helping you and not hurting you more.
This story is short, spicy and is emotional. Levi and Arden, have been through so much. It ruined them and they have a lot of things that are triggers. But when they finally accept their feelings things get delicious. I am glad they let each other in and were ther helping each other heal.
This story is written well and it truly shows how trauma can be. Which is real, deep and sometimes ugly. You don’t read many stories that can truly describe trauma as well as how people handle it. But it also is spicy and makes the story even better.
Make sure you read the trigger warnings since there are sensitive topics. Your mental health matters and you are not alone. Always reach out to someone if you need to talk, it’s okay not to be okay.
A Step Too Close, the second book in The Breaking Point Series, is a follow-up to A Piece Too Far, which focused on Wilder and Macie, and introduced Arden, Wilder's sister and Macie's best friend, as well as Levi, who was briefly introduced at the end.
A Step Too Close revolves around Arden and Levi, with Levi, a detective, mentoring Arden to become a PI. As they work together, romance blossoms, and they open up about their past traumas and the lasting impact on their mental health. As they build a future together, they must confront a challenge from the past.
Emily has done an excellent job of writing this book, making the transition between the first and second books smooth and effortless. The characters are also relatable and well-developed. Please note that this book contains trigger warnings, so reader discretion is advised.

This story picks up after the first book, focusing more on Arden and Levi. Having seen them in the previous installment, I was curious to see how their individual stories would unfold. What I found was a deeper look into some heavy experiences they’ve both been through. It wasn't always easy to read about what they had to face. Levi, in particular, carried a lot of baggage from his past. It made sense why he was the way he was, and you could see how much he was struggling internally. Arden also had her own set of challenges, and understanding her background helped explain some of her actions and motivations from the first book. As the story progressed, you could see Arden and Levi starting to connect on a deeper level. They seemed to find some comfort in each other, which felt like a positive step given everything they had endured. It was interesting to watch them navigate their feelings and try to support one another. There were definitely some intense moments and situations that arose. It’s worth being aware that the book touches on some sensitive subjects, so checking the warnings beforehand is a good idea. The way the author handled these topics felt genuine and highlighted the lasting impact of difficult events. Overall, this book felt like a continuation of Arden and Levi's journey, exploring their individual struggles and the beginnings of their connection. It offers a look at how past experiences can shape people and how finding someone who understands can make a difference.
This is the second book in the series and just flows so well with the first one, again Emily has shown us that males are not invincible and they suffer trauma too but also that your trauma doesn't have to define you. Our MMC Levi has had the worst kind of trauma and he struggles to keep it together, enter tandem our FMC who we met in book 1, tandem has also had trauma of her own and been a victim in one of the worst kinds of ways. Levi and tandem save each other, tandem is a hard ass who doesn't take no for an answer when she wants something she gets it and Levi is no exception. Their story will have your heart breaking over and over but in the end love will win. This book has heavy triggers so please read the full list at EDK novels. This series is really something special, filled with all the spice and darkness we've grown to live from Emily but also sends strong messages. I can't recommend this series enough! Thanks again Emily for a 10/10 read.
"I wanted to make a real difference and actually care about finding the real truth, not the truth the government is notorious for spoon-feeding the public."
This book is classified as Dark Romance, and is book two of a connected series. It does have a trigger warning list: grape, breeding with pregnancy, mention of violence grape, mention of CSA, mention of child unalive, mention of unalive of loved one, mention of combat injury, PTSD, nightmares, anxiety, drooging, unaliving, no no square mutilation, revenge grape.
The book is written in first person. This book has multiple point of views: Arden and Levi. Arden is working to become a private investigator, with the help of Levi. Levi was a Marine before becoming a private investigator. Arden is also Wilder's (book one) sister.
I gave this book five stars. The one thing that sticks out to me is the fact Arden has trauma that has happened in her past, but she does not let it effect her goals.
This is a very emotional read. I really enjoyed it. But I did find it very rushed, even for a novella. I wish it was longer and more fleshed out.
One big issue I had, was when the same day after being anally raped, Arden asks Levi to take her anally(to give her a more positive feeling to connect to instead of the rape). My issue isn't with the hypersexuality and coping mechanism, I actually love the representation that people can become hypersexual after SA. My issue is with the fact that there has to be some pain from the rape. Even if her rapist wasn't that big in size, even a small sized man can cause pain during rape even if it doesn't end up with "injury". I just don't see how she'd feel okay enough pain wise to take her husband only a few hours later in the same place. Especially not as rough as they did.
But overall it was good read. I'd still recommend.

Arden and Levi have sizzling chemistry! They try to fight their feelings, but sparks fly, and they confess their attraction. They share their past traumas and help each other heal.
Wilder is Arden's brother, and Marci is her best friend. They join the story, and we get to see what's happening with them, too!
I was happy with the ending. Someone got what they deserved. Revenge at its finest. I can't wait for the next book!
There really aren’t any words that could even start to describe the emotional rollercoaster of a journey I was just taken on !! all I can say with 100% certainty was I was not prepared For Arden and Levi’s story . I was not prepared for the way it just touched my heart or all the emotions it ended up stirring inside me . All the traumatic events that Levi endured in his life , and for Arden learning what and went through. These things definitely took a toll on both of their lives both emotionally and physically. I just loved watching their relationship develop over time , how even when they were both denying what they felt for each other , it was inevitable!!! Sometimes you just can’t deny what your heart is telling you. Just run as fast as you can and read A Step Too close !!! Trust me when I say it’s everything absolutely everything you’ll ever need
🖤 This is book 2 in the interconnected series. For better understanding and enjoyment, read book 1 before reading A Step Too Close.
🖤 This was one of the first books by this author that I have read, and I’m definitely excited to read more. The story sucked me in so quick, it was fast paced, spicy, and it pulled at my heart strings. Arden and Levi are so great together, I was excited to see more of them after we get glimpses of them in the first book (A Piece Too Far). I love how involved Macie and Wilder (FMC and MMC of book 1) are in this book with Macie being Arden’s best friend and Wilder being Arden’s brother.
🖤 Arden and Levi are both fierce and so strong for what they went through. When you learn what happened to Levi’s wife and daughter, you will defiantly need your tissues. It was heartbreaking and had me wanting to reach in there and love on them both. I love how supportive Levi is of Arden and how he helps her through everything that has happened and is happening.

Arden is determined to become a private investigator and not just because she’s insanely attracted to Levi who has agreed to be her mentor. As they work together, they also have to communicate in order to move on from their traumatic pasts even when that past may come back to haunt them.
I absolutely loved Arden in the first story and now I love her even more. Both she and Levi had so much trauma - their stories broke my heart. But I thought that their communication and understanding with each other was so beautiful. Their chemistry was so hot and they could not get enough! I also adored Wilder and Jett and how supportive and understanding they were of everything that happened. I can’t wait to read Jett’s story!
Something that I enjoyed about this book was that both of the main characters, Arden and Levi, bonded and found common ground through their past trauma. It added a different element to their relationship - there was an inherent understanding of how trauma impacts their reactions and that rationale doesn't always weigh into the equation. When this books starts, Arden and Levi have already have a back history and are interacting on a daily basis. This allows readers to jump to the point in the plot where their ability and willingness to deny their attraction is coming to end. Which means that readers get the best of both of insta lust and the burn of the slow build up. This book was fast paced, quick read that was filled with lust, love, tension, and action.
