Experience Christmas Through the Old Testament’s Hidden Promises

Discover the rich tapestry of Christ’s coming woven throughout the entire Old Testament in There Shone a Holy Light, a compelling Advent devotional by Mitchell L. Chase. This unique exploration takes readers on a 25–day journey through the ancient stories, prophecies, and patterns that pointed to the birth of Jesus centuries before that holy night in Bethlehem.

From Adam to Solomon, each daily reading illuminates how God carefully crafted His redemptive plan through unexpected characters and seemingly ordinary events. Chase masterfully reveals how figures like Noah, Joseph, Moses, and David weren’t just historical characters—they were living prophecies of the Messiah to come. Through careful biblical analysis and engaging storytelling, readers will discover fresh insights about how Jesus fulfilled and exceeded every Old Testament foreshadowing.

Perfect for both personal reflection and family worship during the Advent season, this devotional helps modern readers understand Christmas in its full biblical context. Each chapter builds anticipation for Christ’s coming by revealing another layer of God’s intricate plan, showing how even the smallest details of Old Testament narratives pointed to the ultimate gift of the incarnation.

Whether you’re a seasoned Bible student or new to exploring Scripture’s interconnected stories, There Shone a Holy Light will deepen your appreciation for God’s perfect plan of salvation. Chase’s accessible writing style makes complex theological concepts clear and applicable, while maintaining scholarly depth and biblical faithfulness.

This Christmas season, let the ancient promises of Scripture illuminate your celebration of Christ’s birth. Through these daily readings, you’ll gain a renewed sense of wonder at how God orchestrated history to prepare the way for the arrival of His Son, the true and better fulfillment of every Old Testament type and shadow.

My endorsement: “It’s been said that the Old Testament is like a room full of treasure, but the room is dimly lit. In this daily Advent devotional, Mitch Chase leads us into that great room, finds the dimmer switch, and illuminates the treasure. What better way to prepare for Christmas than to behold, in 25 brilliant reflections, the sparkling glories of the coming Messiah? Let’s adore him afresh this year.”

This review is 100% my own opinion!

I’m not giving this book a star rating as it is a personal devotion book. I enjoyed working my way through There Shone a Holy Light and setting time aside each day to learn about how Biblical figures in the Old Testament pointed to Jesus in some way. I would probably have to study this a bit more to fully grasp how each figure does this but this book was a good, introductory way of getting me thinking.

I did find the writing at times a bit too complicated and I could find myself having to read sentences a couple of times to fully understand what was being said. Perhaps I could have benefited from reading this book earlier in the day, when I wasn’t as tired, but I felt the sentences could have been explained a bit simpler?

I would have also liked more examples of female figures who pointed to Jesus in the Old Testament - Ruth and Rahab are mentioned but I would have liked more examples if there are some?

Overall, I did enjoy these Advent readings and seeing how Jesus was foreshadowed in the Old Testament. I think this warrants further personal study to fully understand the topic, but this book helped me get into a routine of studying and thinking about the true meaning of Christmas.

As an Old Testament enthusiast this is exactly the kind of advent devotional I want to read! Grounded in the text. Looking to the Messiah. Glorying in the gospel. If you didn’t read it this year make sure you read it next.
