A vg minus copy because it is an ex-library copy with ex-library markings. Otherwise it is in very good plus conditon with light wear to covers and library reinforcment tape to edges applied even though not needed. Illustrates all of the vp's and includes biographies of varying lengths on each. 596 pages. A very worthwhile reference work.

An interesting read about the vice presidents, most of whom were peripheral figures in history, with a few heavyweights in the early years. The trend was that the early vice presidents were usually major political figures, and then for nearly 100 years they were non-entities, (George Dallas? Thomas Hendricks? Garrett Augustus Hobart?) before becoming important again. Some presidents ignored their vice presidents, others, especially in later years, made them integral parts of the administration. The job itself is nothing--or everything--depending on the circumstances, and plenty of presidents have died in office elevating the number two to the top job.
