Luca Matthews #3

Beneath the Ice

Rate this book
The gripping new Antarctica thriller from the author of The Secret Chamber

Two kilometers beneath the frozen ice caps of Antarctica lies a lake. It is the only one of its kind, the water unfrozen and perfectly preserved for a quarter of a century. Luca Matthews has been asked by his school friend, MI6 officer, Oliver Bates to lead a British team of scientists to the site to discover what secrets lie trapped below the ice. But Bates has secrets of his own. He tells Luca that the Russian station commander in Antarctica is part of a smuggling ring of weapon’s grade uranium coming out of the former Soviet block. All Luca needs to do is insert a memory stick into the main computer so that MI6 can track all communication into and out of the base. Luca isn’t so sure. He needs to work out who he can trust and quickly—because if he doesn’t get out in just 8 days, there will be no way out, and Luca will be stranded in Antarctica alone.

I felt like the author threw every plot line he could think of into this book. He was going for it hook line and sinker and yet it felt laboured and lengthy. The suspense was lacking - i think he could have had a shorter, pithier and more suspenseful drama

Sometimes a bit hard going but overall I enjoyed this book. Sometimes sad, but lots of action.

Books always seem to get across how horrible it is to die in an icy cold environment much better than films do, and this is no exception.
Great thrilling story with an amazingly big threat and surprising locations.
Sadly, no mention of hockey - and orcas were killed :(

"country" # 21 Antarctica - not actually a country but I wanted to include it
