An unpublished manuscript threatens to ignite a scandal that could obliterate a small Catholic school on the Jersey Shore. Private investigator Riley King is tasked by an alluring female literary agent to find the author, who vanished shortly after submitting the work. Complicating matters is the menacing interference of the school's chief benefactor, a local businessman with suspected mob ties. King, with the help of radio talk show host Rick Stone, uncovers a web of deception with bigger consequences, a budding conspiracy that could bring down the entire region. The suspense never stops, with twists lurking around every corner. About the Author "Something of the Night" is Richard Neer's first novel featuring detective Riley King and his talk radio ally Rick Stone, as they investigate crime along the eastern seaboard. His work of non-fiction entitled "FM, the Rise and Fall of Rock Radio", (Villard 2001),is the true story of how corporate interests destroyed a medium that millions grew up cherishing. Neer has worked in important roles both on and off the air at two of the most prestigious and groundbreaking radio stations in history---the progressive rocker WNEW-FM for almost thirty years, and the nation's first full time sports talker, WFAN over the past twenty eight. The follow-up to "Something of the Night", entitled "The Master Builders" was released in May of 2016. He currently is in the final stages of preparing his next novel, "The Punch List", featuring the same protagonists.
The storyline wasn’t bad, but I found the cliches, overuse of ‘fancy’ words and the very poor editing it be disconcerting as I read the book. In addition, for a good part of the book I didn’t find Riley King to be overly lead character. I am a big fan of Richard Neer in his roles on the radio so I will give his other books a try. I just hope that in those books he doesn’t feel that he has to try so hard.
Over the decades I’ve enjoyed Richard Neer on the radio. Picked up his FM: the Rise and Fall of Rock Radio and enjoyed it tremendously so figured I’d try one of his Riley King books. A good story and an easy read. Will definitely read another!
Richard Neer avoids being a sports guy or a radio guy and instead creates likeable and interesting characters in this first novel in the Riley King series. The plot is complex enough to keep the reader guessing and the personal relationships are well constructed. This is a nice airplane/beach book that is an easy read and worth adding to your Kindle.
My first e-book! Read it on my iPhone. Worked great, altho it ran down my charge a bit rapidly. Standard PI novel written by WFAN sports show radio host. Worth keeping up with.
I don't usually like mysteries but I enjoyed this one. The characters were real -flaws and all and the situations while complex at times were readily resolved
