“I smelled something.” Nick’s voice sounded as empty and dead as his eyes. “I smelled something, and tracked it here…”
Black gets a new case, solving the murder of the most famous tech mogul in the world, Lucian Rucker, after he’s gunned down on his company’s steps.
Unfortunately, no one else knows Lucian’s dead, not even the police, and Lucian’s stock holders and lawyer, the same people who hired Black, would very much like to keep it that way. They want Black to solve it, yet refuse him access to the body, Rucker’s companies, and the mysterious tech Rucker was working on before his death, which might be the motive.
More than anything, they want to bury Lucian’s secrets before his murder inevitably comes to light.
But Lucian’s secrets are dark––darker than Black ever imagined, and they start to hit at Black personally as he uncovers the billionaire’s crimes. When more people start to die, and the shooter’s victims increasingly follow a pattern, Black and Miri, and the rest of their team, must hunt down the mysterious killer before more people they love get caught in the crossfire.

This is a gripping murder mystery steeped in secrecy and danger. Black is tasked with solving the murder of tech mogul Lucian Rucker, whose death is being deliberately concealed by those who hired him. Restricted access to crucial evidence, including the body and Lucian's mysterious technology, complicates the investigation. As Black delves deeper, he uncovers a web of dark secrets tied to Lucian's past. The case turns personal when a series of murders, fitting a chilling pattern, threaten those close to him. With the help of his team, Black must race against time to stop the elusive killer.
I loved this story due to the clever weaving of multiple storylines and the build up to the ending which was a complete surprise. Plenty of emotions and feelings from the characters as more became clear as the story progressed. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
Somehow I knew this author was not finished with Quentin Black, et al. But, I did not expect the ending! After waiting 3 years for the next book in the series, this book wasn't a rollercoaster ride, but a rocket that lost its coordinates! Once again this author delivered. Paranormal strangeness (seemingly oxymoronic, but it isn't), more horrid evil individuals, vampires who seem to know more than the seers, and brutal killings, mass murder, chases ... oh my. Then, after an intense climax, the author leaves me again waiting ... Next book, please not three years.
Another Quentin Black Paranormal Mystery that had me reading continuously, a gem !
Loved this latest installment of the Quentin Black series. lots of unexpected twists. The ending was amazing. I'm going to need to re-read the last book in the Midnight Detective series because these two books just overlapped with each other. I can't wait for the next book.
If I wanted a murder mystery without romance, I would have read Nancy Drew! Although the murder was a mystery that could have only been solved by Quentin, Miri, and their team of specialist I am missing the romance. Without the romance between Quentin and Miri, there is a huge black hole in the storyline, a gap or hollowness that should have been filled with a passion that can only be shared between two mated seers. This is not a paranormal romance and as I think about it, there hasn't been any romance (maybe) since Black is Magic. The earlier books had a good balance of paranormal romance with paranormal mystery, and they were great 4- and 5-star books. This series instead of being a paranormal romance is a paranormal mystery.... 3 stars only.
This book links ALMOST MIDNIGHT from the MIDNIGHT series that features Nick and some of our questions are finally answered in Black to Light. But the journey to the answers I have been looking forward to getting was a long and sometimes boring one.
The earlier books in this series were spectacular with lots of romance, and so many page turning thrills my heart would beat out of my chest. The last few books in the Quentin Black and Midnight series are close to boring in comparison. I wonder if, at some point, the author decided to end the series but changed her mind and took the storyline into a different direction that included all of our favorite characters but excluded the romance and page turning suspense. It read like there was no focus on the storyline. Like she had lots of distractions.
