I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Alex is a fifteen-year-old adrenaline junkie who enjoys taunting death by jumping in front of cars and running on train tracks. Ever since his best friend died, Alex has lost the will to live. Unbeknownst to him, Death is watching. Death could easily snap is fingers and kill Alex, however he does not want to take life away from someone who wants to die; so first he needs to give Alex a reason to live.

Courting Death is a short story aimed at teenagers. Although it is clear that Livia Hardy has the ability to write well, I did not care for this book. Its storyline was rather depressing with a horrible ending. Although the length of the book meant the reader had not really got to know the characters well, a happy ending at least would have been better.

And I will just say 'wow'. This book was something I never expected. It was far too dark for a start for me to end up enjoying. It moves at a fast pace and the main character is a troubled one who loves to test death (who is a major character in the book) every day.
I see the book as more about obsession and goals than anything else. It is a hard thing to recommend as to enjoy this book is not something I understand the appeal of.
It is well written, short and the characters are real but it is also something I could not put in a genre. I don't know the authors aim but I finished the book and I was a little sadder for reading it.
So, 3 stars. I would let anyone read it but it is not something everyone should read.

I found this a very interesting concept and enjoyed the fast pace - at least to begin with.

I realise the target audience is teenagers, which I am not, and perhaps this is why I would have appreciated a more complex, multi-layered story line. I was surprised at how suddenly the book ended.

Nevertheless, I really liked it and look forward to more stories from Livia Hardy - perhaps for an older audience!

Really enjoyed this book. I quite liked the character of Alex whilst at the same time I was obviously disapproving of his 'hobby'. A very unique read that I will pass onto my teenage daughter.

Brilliant book, kept me hooked to find out what was going to happen. Having written it at 16, I expected to be a bit less enthusiastic about it at 30... but I wasn't!
