This volume collects Spider-Girl #85-100 plus Spider-Man Family #1.

In this volume, Spider-Girl deals with Normie Osborn and his machinations, a cabal of assassins called the Scriers, and one of her father's old enemies, as well as all the mortal jeopardy of being a high school student.

DeFalco manages to capture the "same but different" thing fans are always clamoring for but rarely get. These Spider-Girl tales evoke the spirit of Spider-Man stories but through a different lens and without the weight of decades of continuity. The family dynamic gives it a familiar feel but with enough new wrinkles to make it feel new.

They are also tremendously accessible. There are something like 70 issues of Spider-Girl that I've never read but had no idea keeping up with the proceedings. Workhorses Ron Frenz, Pat Oliffe, and Ron Lim keep the trains running on time and give the series a fairly consistent look.

I have to think that this series would be better received today now that it's more acceptable for people of all sexes and genders to consume nerd culture. I also don't think it would be allowed to go 100 issues now days since titles rarely pass 10 issues before being reset. I wouldn't say this Spider-Girl run is a masterpiece but it's definitely in the top ten Marvel books published during this time.

These are good old-fashioned comics, with stakes ranging from cosmic to street-level, and as much focus on the high school kids hanging out with their friend May as the costumed heroes who consider Spider-Girl an ally. I wouldn't say the comic ever achieves brilliance, but reliably good pacing, competence, and heart make this a great comfort read.
