Robert Madigan … a good doctor, at least that is what he aspires to be, until his father’s death leaves him with no way to pay tuition and finish medical school. When approached by Gavin Noel, and recruited to start a “Questionable Practice“ with two of his friends … he has no idea that this undoubtably questionable venture just might be the end of … everything! Brilliantly written with DEEP, throughly developed characters and a smooth flowing, decidedly dark noir feel, this story is unquestionably GOOD! In fact, it has me thinking and shivering STILL, twelve hours after finishing! I can’t get it, OR these fabulous characters … out … of … my … mind! And that final twist!!! No spoilers! I’ll not be ruining the mystery, the suspense, the surprise, or the fascination that is this fantastic story for future listeners. I went in cold. I didn’t even read the audible blurb on this one, I just downloaded based on a facebook post, hit play, and WOW! The writing is so good, so clear, so beautifully executed that I had no questions, no “huh” moments, just plenty of jaw dropping, edge of my recliner, “oh holy NO” shivery moments! Never, have I ever, listened to a book like this, and I loved every single fantastically narrated second! The voicing is so amazingly clear, so emotive, and moves the story along brilliantly, leaving no doubt what the characters are thinking, feeling, or planning, truly bringing the authors vision to stunning life! This thought provoking, powerhouse of a listen gets a truly deserving FIVE stars across ALL categories! I’m slack jawed! I loved it!

This story is set in 1935. The book immediately draws you in.
It starts with Robert Madigan, a medical student at Penn University who is struggling financially, going to meet a stranger, Gavin Noel, to find out about a potential job, as recommended by his professor, Frank Howell. Robert desperately needs more money to support his mother and younger siblings and to avoid dropping out of college, but he wasn’t anticipating the job offer would be as a hired killer.
However he decides his only option is to take on this unsavory role, on the basis that the targets are all bad people. But he doesn’t think he can do it alone, so he ropes in two fellow students. These are his equally impoverished cousin Samuel and rich bored friend Clark. Their role will be to secure the victim, whom Robert will kill.
The team do some strategizing planning but they weren’t anticipating the first target to be an accountant accused only of embezzlement, rather than something more evil.
Can they go through with it? Do they make mistakes? What will ensue? What have they got themselves ensnared into? And what of Howell and Noel?
Plenty of twists and turns in this story.

It is so exciting to find an author that continues to grow from novel to novel. Randy Moon is such a writer. Moon, who formerly published under the pen name Schuyler Randall, recently released his noir thriller Questionable Practice. A medical student finds himself in desperate circumstances and must make desperate choices to support his family back home and keep his dreams alive. But desperate choices, especially the ones a man must rationalize to himself, often carry huge consequences.
Randy Moon has developed a cast of well-rounded characters that he skillfully portrays justifying themselves in a dangerous but lucrative career as a team of doctors-in-training who turn into executioners of the unsavory. It’s only after they are knee-deep in retribution do they realize that the “unsavory” targets assigned to them by their sentencing judge/paymaster are becoming harder to distinguish from the merely “unlikable” or even innocent.
Moon does an excellent job of weaving a dark story replete with doubts, desperation, and the possibility of real retribution. He is becoming a master of the noir.

This book is a thriller, with the “good guys” actually not being so good in that they become paid killers. I guess desperate times might call for desperate measures, and these are definitely desperate times. Maybe the people they’re killing aren’t very good people and it can be justified. Are you buying this?
It’s an interesting read because it puts the characters who are good people, or at least want to be, in a difficult situation, and then lets us ride along as they figure out what their limits are and how to deal with the situation. The historical aspects, with the story happening during the Great Depression, are interesting in that they intensify the situation while, due to the lack of modern technology, also makes getting caught less likely than it would be today. An interesting mind exercise in an exciting and intense story.

Three friends/students training to become a doctor, a mortician, and a psychiatrist are offered a deal by a professor to kill people. Morality gets set aside until it can no longer be ignored. Interesting concept, okay listen. Narrator seemed flat.

I thoughouly enjoyed this page turner. Historical, well thought out and disturbing. Randy Moon paints an intriguing picture of what happens when a good doctor goes bad.
