Too bad this 1986 collection of Feldman’s poems isn’t a work in progress.
Feldman is a recognized poet who started publishing in 1961, and he has 11 works to his credit, but All Of Us Here does not satisfy.
Feldman’s poems are too long, too prose-like. He calls this collection poetry, but there isn’t much supporting evidence.
There are words on the pages, but not much poetic distillation. I realize that it is arguably hubristic to say that another poet’s work really isn’t poetry.
Nevertheless, I assert that poetry may be real for the writer, and not so real for the reader.
Feldman’s offerings certainly are not incoherent, but I dare to say that they are inchoate. Too much of it seems to be just words. The poetic art part is missing.
Coleridge would not be pleased.
