Ending at 90% on my Kindle this short second book in a series deals with Elizabeth's attempt to reenter society while living with her relatives, the Gardiners, in London. Unfortunately when she attends her first ball some of the "gentlemen" present remember seeing her serving as a maid in that wayside inn and plan to "out" her. Darcy overhears her and immediately escorts her back to the Gardiners' house. However, Caroline Bingley has also overheard him relating his plans to propose to Elizabeth to Charles Bingley and she takes action to make that impossible.
The Gardiners find that his business has been affected by the presence of a "fallen" woman in their home and have no choice but to send her back to Meryton where crowded conditions force her to sleep on the floor in one of the bedrooms her sister inhabits.
Darcy does go to the Gardiners the next morning, and finding her gone and hearing the reasons goes back to Bingley's house and Caroline is dealt with. Darcy is now off to Meryton and cannot see how Elizabeth has any chance of refusing him now. It is as he offers that this portion of the story, again, leaves us hanging.
Even though this book is rated MA it is as the first book in that there are no sex scenes but more descriptions about how Darcy lusts after Elizabeth. Book 3 will not be released until August 25th.
This is the second book in a series. I read the first book and thought it was OK, but the preview chapters for the second book me anxious to read the next book. Book 2 did not disappoint. I found the transitions and shifts in perspective not as jolting.
As a reminder this book is for mature audiences only. This book ends at a good spot but I’m sure there will be more bumps in the road for Elizabeth and Darcy.
The story just keeps getting better. Poor Elizabeth had had it so rough but she is still trying to keep her dignity and be true to herself. Some serious issues happen in London and Darcy’s Pride still needs massive correction. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment of the story.
I’m going to write a cross book review for these x4 + books. I’ll post for each book. So spoilers ahead. Beware. This story starts with Lizzie trapped as a serving maid in a dubious establishment after she is tricked to go work as a governess, a job that doesn’t exist. Lizzy finds out she’s being taken to be a light skirt in London and escapes, taking a job at a public house. Darcy, due to a storm, stumbles across this house and spots Lizzy. He discovers enough of her story to insist on taking her with him to pemberly. Lizzie resists of course but eventually agrees. Now what can Darcy do with her. Her reputation is sullied by no fault of her own and he still wants her. But it would be unsupportable to marry her. He rather stupidly asks her to be his mistress, with earns him a reddened cheek and a jaunt across the country. I’ll say no more but this is a nice slow burn sexy as hell series I’m really loving and cannot wait for part 5.
