Congratulations! You've been hired by a client to get something done. Presumably, you have some sort of expertise in the area, you have someone on your team who is knowledgeable, or you'll be hiring somebody who does.
This book provides some of the lessons I've learned over my 35-year career about managing consulting projects.
You will
How to create a Statement of Work and what the SOW should include How to control change Controlling the chaos of a project What to do about the micromanaging client How to handle meetings How to communicate with your client What to do when it all goes south
Mr. Lowe gets to the point in this book, so the book is not long (and does not need to be). There are some elements of the book where there is further research which will be needed by the reader. For example, Mr. Lowe talks a lot about SOWs, so it would be nice to have a sample one in there just to get a sense of a format which he used during his consulting career. I know that for every client and engagement they would be different, but some common elements are always there which a fictitious SOW would illustrate. Other than that, I would not say any more examples are needed for what the book covers. I did see some typos in the last couple of chapters which could be repaired with an update to the Kindle copy which I read. The Kindle versions of this book and many of Mr. Lowe's books are not expensive or can be borrowed for free through the Kindle lending library. This one was definitely worth the small investment.
The author of this book has obviously managed many large consulting projects and know what it takes to keep them on track and within budget while making you clients praise the success of your work. This wonderfully concise volume is a gem!
