A story collection by the acclaimed Austrian novelist of the early and mid twentieth century, DIVERTIMENTI AND VARIATIONS mediates traditional and experimental fictional technique to explore an authentic self and creates musically-based narrative forms. These narrative experiments were begun in 1923, not long after the publication of Joyce's Ulysses, with its fugue-like "Sirens" chapter. Traditional psychological realism combines with four-part "symphonic" experimental form--complete with development, intermezzi, and thematic repetition and variation--to demonstrate how technique is adequate to reveal and resolve conflict. Love interests, family tensions, dreams forcing the dreamers to face their struggles, physical injury, a young blind woman's gaining sight, insanity, unexamined lives--Doderer develops these themes by adeptly employing innovative narrative structures grounded in musical formalisms.

About the author

Heimito von Doderer lebte fast ausschließlich in Wien. 1916 geriet er in russische Gefangenschaft und kehrte erst 1920 zurück. Er studierte Geschichtswissenschaft. Seit der Veröffentlichung seiner Hauptwerke "Die Strudlhofstiege" (1951) und "Die Dämonen" (1956) gilt er als einer der bedeutendsten österreichischen Schriftsteller.

Le sorprese di un decadente

Questo libro raccoglie una serie di racconti e piccole storie di Doderer, che permettono di completare la conoscenza dell'autore del monumentale I Demoni. Molti dei racconti sono veramente belli: su tutti l'ultimo (Due bugie ovvero una antica tragedia di paese) emerge per la drammaticità della storia. Ma forse questo racconto è anche il meno Dodereriano di tutti, perché è nei piccoli ritratti e storie ambientate a Vienna, in genere caratterizzate da una sottile ironia, che emerge il Doderer che conosciamo. In questo senso va assolutamente gustato il primo racconto del libro. In definitiva un libro attraverso il quale ci si immerge nelle atmosfere di uno dei grandi decadenti del secolo, apprezzandolo da una angolazione a volte sorprendente.
