Not a review, but rather my inspiration for writing this book.
I have been building wealth for over fifty years through several very different and very successful careers, each of which made me wealthy. In this book I explain the three basic and easy to understand financial concepts anyone can use to both build and protect their wealth.
But it was only during this past year, while I was visiting my 96 yr. old mother in a nursing home, that I gained insight into what awaits most of our retirement savings.
The money my mother had earned as a public school teacher and had frugally saved for over 50 years was rapidly being drained away as she dozed off in her chair. They were taking it simply because she still had it; while other residents who had already enjoyed spending their money, were now getting a free ride. I had helped my mother to save and invest when I should have encouraged her to spend. I had failed my own mother by not encouraging her to spend all she had earned and saved, while she was still able to enjoy it.
But I was determined not to fail myself.
I needed a plan…a logical plan to enjoy strategically spending or gifting it all away over a predetermined period of time; before the private IRA, 401(k) and Roth retirement accounts are nationalized and redistributed. I needed a plan to spend it all and die broke – insolvent, but not illiquid or destitute.
Surprisingly, my plan for building my wealth was simpler and came more naturally to me than my plan for spending it all.
Your grave stone will have two dates separated by a hyphen. You have no control over the dates but you do have control over the hyphen … that’s your life. I wrote this book show readers how to make that one hell of a hyphen.
The author, Stanley Riggs, has done a great job at helping people realize what they need to understand with regard to their hard-earned retirement money.
After watching his own mother miss out on enjoying her life by saving all of her money for her golden years and not spending any of it on herself, he decided to write this book and help people realize the need for balance with regard to saving and spending money. This book helps the reader to understand the importance of enjoying life while also being responsible for setting money aside for retirement years.
While he was a definite advocate of a certain type of investment, he also explained the drawbacks of certain other investments. With the national debt climbing at an exponential rate, this had a lot of good information to keep in mind as far as what could happen to people's IRAs and 401k plans. Mr. Riggs gave examples of legislation that is currently being discussed that could greatly affect retirement income. To be honest, while it scared me to read what was contained in this book, it gave me some peace of mind knowing that I could help myself prepare for what may be coming in the near future.
I enjoyed the great depth of knowledge contained in this book and look forward to reassessing my own future needs and investments. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in being fiscally responsible for their own well-being.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received this product free for review but as always, despite receiving a free product I'm perfectly candid in my review. I want you to have as good an experience on Amazon as I do.
Well, it certainly cannot be said that this is your typical investment book. Rather one could describe it rather aptly as a prolonged political rant.
On the positive side, he's right. You don't want to die rich and you should try to get all you can out of life and skid into the end with nothing left. As a general concept, that's perfect. His research is detailed, though skewed, and he lays everything out rather meticulously.
To the negative, a significant section of the book seems to be devoted to scaring investors. Oh my, the government is coming to take your 401k and steal all your hard-earned savings! The government is going to default and we're all going to be pitched into chaos and ruin! This reads like an ultra-conservative economics lecture. I'm annoyed and unimpressed.
In summary, this isn't really helpful to anyone who's not already pretty well off. His general advice to invest in real estate is a disaster waiting to happen for the majority of potential investors. It seems the author is trying to scare people into doing things his way by telling them that their world is coming to an end.
PS: I hope my review was helpful. If it was not, then please let me know what I left out that you’d want to know. I always aim to improve.
Build Wealth and Spend It All is a very informative look at what it takes to build wealth. I like that the author takes the time to really explain many of the topics; I felt like I really learned a great deal. The author doesn’t focus on get rich quick schemes, but rather points out that building wealth is like quitting smoking, simple but not easy. He really takes an honest look at the information you need to know, and the choices you have to make in order to really begin to create wealth. This made the advice much more worthwhile. I think that this is a great book for anyone looking for real, detailed information on building wealth.
I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Lots of great advice! After all, you can't take it with you when you go! Definitely has some great ideas that I will be using in my life. Clear, and easy to understand.
I'm torn between a 3-star and 4-star review. This book is very well written and loaded with facts, data and research. I must say it is very well researched. However in many cases it is selective research using only research that supports the author's premise. The author is obviously very successful, so you simply cannot just dismiss what he says. What he has done has worked for him, but I'm not sure it can work for everyone. I thought many of his predictions border on paranoid and seemed to have a political motive.
Riggs is very pro real estate and anti financial assets. With some exceptions near the end of the book, he is very single minded in his approach. My personal experience is that there are other approaches. I am very anti-real estate and pro financial assets. I have never owned my own business and have only worked for a wage. Although perhaps not as financially successful as the author, I have built many memories from my varied activities and have travelled the world. I am now living a comfortable early retirement with substantial passive income from financial assets and own no real property, nor have I since 1993. My financial assets accumulated from savings from my employment income and investing it in dividend growth stocks.
Although there was a general strategy outlined in the book, there is very limited specifics that an average person can take away and apply.
Regardless, it was a well written book that does make you think and I commend the author for putting his ideas forth in a well organized fashion.
I think it is worthwhile reading for those in the upper income levels. Keep an open mind while reading and recognize that this is not the only way.
Freaky take to what can happen to our 401ks and retirements if the government decides to take and redistribute them, makes you concerned for the future
