Pagan Eyes #3

Declaration

Rate this book
Declaration is book three in the "Pagan Eyes" series, but also can be read as a stand alone book.

Ethan finds himself trapped between the world he knows and the world that could be. A sadistic bully, an unsympathetic principal, and an unreachable love interest make high school difficult for Ethan. He feels like he's living a lie, trying to blend in at school in an effort to keep his head attached to his body.

Fear that he's not the son his father wants negates the support his Wiccan family offers. An impromptu trip into the future saves him from an enraged bully while instilling doubts about where he really belongs. Somehow, he has to find a way to survive in his own world tossing aside his mask and doubts.

Magic, Mayhem, Time travel and... show tunes! A lot of laughter, a few tears and a big cheer for Declaration. A great coming of age story. Tamara Hoffa, reviewer

"An adventurous YA fantasy tale of time-travel, being happy with oneself, and the first blush of love." - V.L. Locey, reviewer

I received this book from the author, Rayna Noire, and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock. Declaration is the third book in the Pagan Eyes series. This is a book about Ethan and his struggle to fit in with everyone in high school, in life being part of a Wiccan family, and with his father. Ethan feels the pressure of not being the son that he thinks his father wants. Ethan also feels draw to a love that he fears he will never see again. This is a story of Ethan’s struggle to fit in or at least survive life as a high school student who is part of a family of witches while he struggles to understand and define himself and his sexuality as well.

This book was good. The first few chapters in this book go back and forth between Ethan now and Ethan thinking about important times in his past. This is something that I don’t follow as well. I would prefer a prologue for the earlier time or something and then start the book but this is just my personal preference. Then after you the reader get caught up on Ethan’s past the book moves onto the rest of his story and flows really well. I enjoyed the book much better after that point.

I’m giving this book 3 fangs.

Pagan Eyes: Declaration is the third book in the Pagan Eyes series, but works as a totally read alone book. All you need to know is Ethan, the main character, isn’t what he seems. His easy-going manner and sense of humor makes him popular, but also gains him a formidable enemy in a bully named Caulb.

This tale is Ethan’s voyage of discovery. He attempts to outsmart his nemesis, while wrestling with the cost of being authentic. He not only battles coming out of the closet, but also coming out of the broom closet. Gay Wiccans and witches aren’t thick on the ground at his high school. An unsympathetic principal labels Ethan as the problem and a distant love interest complicates things.

Just when it looks like things can’t get any worse. Ethan blinks out of his dimension. To say any more would reveal too much. Find out on your own.

This was a fast read brought back the angst and bullying that bedeviled those who are the tiniest bit different. Good addition to the series and a strong original voice too.

A coming of age story with a twist. The author took a common problem and places a unique twist creating an original storyline about accepting who you are. Ethan a young teen struggling with who he is. He doesn't seem to fit into a specific category. He is to short, non athletic, stands out, isn't into girls and seems to have attracted the school bully. Did I forget to mention that he comes from a family of time traveling witches and he is about to go on the journey of enlightenment. Again Ms. Noire creates another great storyline based around tough, real life subjects intertwined with magic, love and adventure. This was a well thought out captivating tale that used the past, present and the future to highlight that things do not always turn out like you think. The road to acceptance of oneself is filled with bumps and detours , Ethan's journey was anything but smooth. The interesting situations, colorful characters and humorous dialogue made for an exciting and entertaining reading experience.

"Declaration" by Rayna Noire is a wonderful book. I came in late into this series but fortunately could keep up with everything. Etahn, our main character, is still at school and with being part of a Wiccan family and gay, he has a lot on his plate already but there is more in store.
Fantasy and time travel come into the plot that cleverly uses two narratives to unfold.
I loved Ethan as main character and am biased towards the book just for the great characterisation of a gay character with a difference. These books that provide gay role models while being entertaining in their own right are very important and the authors caring attitude shows in the bullying subplot.
A real treasure and great fun.
