South Africa is at a tipping point. Unemployment, slow growth, threats to freedom of speech, and poor education can send the country in any direction. Leading scenario planner Frans Cronje identifies the key trends that will shape our future. Will South Africa follow the Narrow Road, the Wide Road, the Rocky Road or the Toll Road? His four scenarios for the country are sobering, sometimes shocking, but also hopeful.
This book is definitely worth a read. The book was published in 2014 and some of the scenarios are already playing out as to what direction our country will go. What I especially like is that Frans Cronje doesn't give into senseless fear mongering but examines all the data in a calm and rational manner. Our country is on the brink of greatness or being a failed state. There is also a middle road though.
One of the best ideas in the book is where Cronje says that most of us don't want to get involved in politics because that's just not for us but even if we don't get involved in politics politics will eventually get involved in us. He outlines how much power as a people have to change the course of our democracy, more than any generation before us. We live in a weird place compared to the rest of the world, we live in one of the freest countries and one of the most unequal.
