Unlike most baby care books, expert pediatrician and health communicator DR. PAUL Roumeliotis takes a unique approach by emphasizing what scientific advances have confirmed—that what happens early on in life affects one's overall health decades down the road. Baby Comes Home communicates the latest science that explains how positive or negative early childhood experiences can have lifelong consequences. The book begins by describing the vital changes that occur in a baby’s brain during the first 18 months. It then explores the new “Science of TLC”, that shows how tender, loving, and caring relationships with babies help to positively shape their brains. The book then presents important practical information on safety in the home and outdoors, baby routines/patterns, immunizations, injury prevention, nutrition, and more. To complete this useful guide, DR.PAUL also reviews common baby care issues and concerns as well as illnesses and conditions commonly seen during the first few years of life. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, daycare teacher or child caregiver, this book is an excellent reference resource for your baby’s current and future health, wellness and prosperity.

My Review: Having a baby is an arduous task, but as a mother of 6 children I am here to tell you that being pregnant is only half the battle. The part of the journey that is the hardest begins when you bring that tiny human home. It is a job and blessing met with a tender heart, a sleepy smile, and pure exhaustion like you have known in your entire life.
Anything you could or want to know the author Dr. Paul Roumeliotis has covered within the 300 pages in Baby Comes Home. He gives you a brief summary on how to take general care of your baby all the way up to the age of 18 months. There is tons of very thought out and well researched information for young or first time parents. Vaccinations seem to be a hot topic these days and the doctor explains those as well. He also gives you information on the baby's soft spot and first bath. So as you can see it is lots of information whether it is the day to day tasks or more important health information. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis runs the gammit and gives you a lot of information to ingest when it comes to your baby. I think this would make a great baby shower gift!
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.
Baby Comes Home provides a quick reference for concerned parents. DR. PAUL discusses everything from baby's developmental milestones and childproofing to biting and behavioral concerns to feeding and immunizations. Each of my girls was very different in development and health. Each one brought us the opportunity to "learn" about new child health and development concerns! Two of the three had asthma, one had severe reflux, one attended daycare (and experienced everything from Fifth's Disease to Scarlet Fever), some were early on milestones, some late on other milestones. In the end, I think we have hit many of the issues addressed in this book over our 20 year parenting adventure--with more yet to come, I am sure! This book offers a quick, vital reference to SO many of the common, early childhood concerns caregivers face.
Baby Comes Home covers many common, early childhood health risks. DR. PAUL devotes a large section of the book to details on many childhood illnesses, infections and health risks commonly affecting infants and toddlers. He addresses everything from asthma and bedbugs to Fifth's Disease and Whooping Cough--all in an easy to read, easy to understand format. He discusses causes, prevention, diagnosis, and typical treatment options clearly and concisely. I would actually recommend keeping this book long past the first 18 months as these conditions happen in later childhood years as well. Baby Comes Home offers a very well developed resource to common--yet frightening for caregivers--childhood health concerns.
Would I recommend Baby Comes Home by DR. Paul Roumeliotis? Whether you're a parent, grandparent, or childcare provider, this book provides a wonderful resource for early childcare and development. While the book is intended as a guide to the critical first 18 months of child development--it provides an excellent health resource for later years as well. Even if you are an "experienced" parent--the information provided in this book will still offer you some benefit as each child is different. You could certainly read the book from beginning to end--but, I would both read it and keep it on hand for later years as a refresher/reference as well. Baby Comes Home is loaded with information to help parents get baby off to a good start in life--and face the many challenges and issues which may pop up along the way.
When I looked and read through Baby Comes Home, I noticed it had the essentials for sleep-deprived parents: it was well-organized with a detailed index for easy referral and it was easy to read. It was reassuring to read too, which is so important in a parental guide, since some of the main feelings of new parents are insecurity and guilt. Am I doing this right? What if I don't do it right? Am I a good parent?
I practiced attachment parenting with my children and Dr. Paul's "science of TLC" truly appealed to me. And if you've been reading my blog, you also know that I love brain wellness, so I thought that Dr. Paul's approach to baby care is not only needed but unique in helping parents understand that we don't need fancy gadgets to raise a healthy child. Don't miss our interview with Dr. Paul below as he explains more on this.
I passed this book on to my sister who was pregnant with her second child and who just delivered last week! These are some of her thoughts on the book. The first thing that caught Teresa's attention about this book is that it covers everything from A to Z that a first-time parent needs to know. She found it very informative, detailed and clear to the point. It was not complicated and she found that Dr. Paul made good use of illustrations or comparisons when explaining certain things. She loved his advice on TLC that any parent in any financial and social situation can easily implement.
She liked that Dr. Paul's advice was preventative, helping parents to understand that setting good habits and childcare dos and don'ts has long-term benefits. She wished she had this book for her first child but is happy to read and use it now, as it is never too late. Her first child is now seven and so some things she says she forgot about newborns and is happy to have this handy book available! When her newborn was regurgitating, she looked it up and found Dr. Paul's advice useful on this topic, as well as that on crying and sleeping patterns.
Dr. Paul's book is about awareness, stressing the importance of a parent's love and attention as the basis to a healthy child, both physically and emotionally. It has practical advice on what to do in various situations that can be distressing for parents, such as when the baby is crying constantly. Both my sister and I found Dr. Paul's book an excellent resource, the go-to book for both new and all parents and grandparents of babies and young children.
Even though my children are older than 18 months I still wanted to read this book to see what I can learn from it. I learned a lot actually, for example, I learned that dark circles under the eyes can mean that a child might be prone to certain allergic conditions. That kind of thing is helpful for any parent to know no matter the children's age because you'll know what signs look out for. There are so many tips on preparing for baby and keeping baby safe at home and even outside the home. There are short lists of some developmental milestones by age from birth until eighteen months. The last part of the book (my favorite part) is about common illnesses and conditions and some tips on what you can do to help your child.
I enjoyed reading Baby Comes Home because there's so much useful information even for parent's of children older than 18 months, like me. Some things I already knew but I did learn a lot of new things from this book. I loved Dr. Pauls writing style because he kept it short and simple and to the point. It was easy to understand. This is a great book for anyone with children or that takes care of children. I give this book 5 stars.
I ran a day-care with two other people in a centre that provided structured learning and social development opportunities for children from two (2) to four (4) years of age. My specialty was with babies from the age of one to eighteen months.
I wish I had this reference book back in the day when I ran my daycare. Having read both The Secret Life of the Unborn Child by T. Verny and What to Expect When You’re Expecting , I found that Baby Comes Home values the importance of the pregnancy similar to The Unborn Child and gives proven facts and information necessary for the baby’s first eighteen months and more than prepares any parent and/or caregiver. I highly recommend this book as it is a fascinating, well documented, reference guide where, if it concern’s a baby’s first two years, you’ll find the answers to all your questions.
As most of my regular readers know, I'm a relatively new grandma to one Mr. Oliver Bonham Chance! Now, I have four sons and I was a hands-on, stay-at-home mom with them, but when Oliver came along I realized that things have changed in the "mom business" since I was a young mother!
So I found Dr. Paul's book to be very helpful, very very informative and very entertaining as well. I appreciated how he breaks down his information in short but complete chapters and he covers all the baby business from A to Z! What to know about baby apnea - it's there; want to know about whether baby should go to a petting zoo, it's there! This is one of the most complete baby wellness books I've had the pleasure of reading - I daresay even better than ol' Dr. Spock!
I would highly recommend "Baby Comes Home" to any new parent (and grandparent)! What a great first gift this would be!
It's been a long time since I've had babies. My two are 14 and 15 now, but I remember those early days with fondness and sometimes a sense of longing. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't precisely start over now, but there is something amazing about those first couple of years of life and whether you're a parent, grandparent, babysitter, or just someone who spends a lot of time with small children, this book holds something for you. Filled with valuable information, this is one of those books that you're going to want to keep on the shelf and pull down whenever you need it.
The author of this wonderful book believes that the first 18 months of every person's life is the most important health wise. He writes about changes in a child's brain and talks about how a child develops. He talks about safety around the child, whether at home, in the car or elsewhere. It is a great book for any parent, caregiver or grandparent to read and keep nearby for reference when needed. A very easy to read and helpful book. I give this book a 5/5. I was given this book for a review and all opinions are my own.
