A first novel about an African American girl who knows nothing about her background. Slang is used in novel although the protagonist,Sylvia, is an honor roll student. I object to this.
The novel is set in a small town in South Carolina where her mother picks vegetables. During her first summer there Sylvia makes friend with a lady down the road who has just turned 100.
The book has some good points but is just does not work.
I could identify with the food.
