“…these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).
Nothing was more important to Charles Spurgeon than the gospel. The “prince of preachers” great passion was that all would know and believe that Jesus is the Christ and find eternal life in Him. Let Spurgeon’s passion for the gospel ignite your own as you read and meditate on Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in Spurgeon and the Gospels.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
Thomas Nelson Bibles sent me a copy of the NKJV Spurgeon and the Gospels (Brown Leathersoft) in exchange for an honest review.
Charles Spurgeon is often heralded as the "Prince of Preachers," earning fame for his rich preaching and solidifying himself as a key figure for the Particular Baptist tradition. What we have here is essentially a devotional that combines the text of the four gospels with commentary by Spurgeon.
The book is wonderfully put together! The text is single-column verse by verse, and it has all the footnotes at the bottom of the page. The print is really easy on the eyes and the text of Scripture is uninterrupted. Every chapter begins with a brief commentary on that chapter by Spurgeon. This Bible is very affordable, so it would be great to give as a gift. The content is very edifying, so it is also a great choice to get for yourself for devotional reading. Altogether, this is a great little book, one worth checking out.
