The story is exactly as it sounds. It's a slice of life that follows the FL as she lives an extremely chill life, first at her maiden home and then at her husband's home. She's a transmigrator from modern times who worked her butt off previously, so all she wants in this life is to chill, read her romance novels, and eat good food. Kinda sounds like me, to be honest XP
The FL, Wen Ye, is actually pretty smart. But she's also extremely lazy, so she often uses her brain to figure out how to get out of more work and responsibility in a way that doesn't make her look bad. She's gotten really good at this over the years. Folks around her eventually catch onto what she's doing, but they can only watch themselves get subtly manipulated into helping her with her work.
I don't particularly enjoy slice of life stories as I find them too slow, but the summary here was amusing enough that it caught my attention. Still, I did find it on the slow side. There's not much rear courtyard scheming, which is my favorite. Instead, we follow along with Wen Ye as she lives her daily life. It was fine initially but after a while, it started dragging. Still, it wasn't a long story at only ~100 chapters, so I decided to finish.
The ML, Xu Xuejia, is interesting too. He's surprisingly open to the FL not wanting any kids, which is very open minded for the historical age, especially when you find out later that his son is actually adopted and not his real son. Wen Ye really lucked out by marrying him!
There's some romance but disappointingly little. Both enter the marriage with a very practical mindset. The ML wants a smart mother for his son, and the FL wants to marry into a simple family where she won't be expected to do much work or bear children. The Xu family is perfect for her needs because there's already an older sister-in-law managing the household and a stepson. The two do enjoy their intimate moments together at night, but initially they felt more like distant friends with benefits than lovers. Later on, after the ML starts understanding the FL's odd ways and falling for her and his feelings are reciprocated, but I wouldn't say there are many sweet moments.
Given the large and complex nature of Chinese families in those times, there were way too many names to remember and I struggled with understanding who was who for the small characters that showed up for a couple chapters. I also was very confused when the son's real parents were revealed, as I didn't follow who they were and didn't care enough to reread to find out.
Speaking of side characters, I really empathize with the FL's sister-in-law. It's not easy managing such a large household by yourself. She tried so hard to get the FL to take some responsibilities off her shoulder, and each time the FL weaseled out of it, like when she pretended to be abysmal at accounting, or when she pushed her sister-in-law to keep her stepson for longer because the sister-in-law can't bear to part with him so quickly. Poor Madam Lu XP
Overall this was a chill but enjoyable read. It was nice to read something a little bit more slow-paced after my last book.
Had it not ended SO FREAKING ABRUPTLY - had we just gotten a BIT more closure I think I'd have gone with 4 stars. As is I really was like "... did ... what? Did we lose part of the story?" Whcih clearly not but ... yikes. Even for a cnovel - EVEN WITH THE "EXTRAS" it was super overly abrupt. Especially since the "extras" were just paragraph snippets like photos.
Another thing was the excessively vague writing - LOOK YOU TOOK AWAY TOO MUCH/IMPLIED TOO MUCH WE DON'T KNOW THE CHARACTERS OR PURPOSE YET SO THE READER IS CONFUSED! A tiny part of me wonders if it was due to pretty mediocre [ok ... bad] "translating." But who knows. I will say THROUGHOUT characters were referred to incorrectly, and instead of it being like the speaker saying "my uncle" they'd say "your uncle" which ... no that's ... a totally different person. 🤦🏻♀️ Plus errors and shit that I mentioned, I overall did enjoy the book but there were so many problems I don't know that I could recommend it. I don't think it'd even be comprehensible.
I'd definitely read more books by the author, but I don't know that I'd re-read this particular one, at least not with the current translation being it.
C ... maaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyybe C+ ~*~*~*~ The Laid-back Life of a Stepmother
1 <.< it says in the family boys start their education at 8 and girls 5 and I’m 99.% sure that’s wrong/reversed … FL is Wen Ye? Ah transmigrated into/as a fetus - lol best way. Her mom is concubine Chang. Interesting (and good) the concubines are allowed to sit and eat (at a secondary table).
2 *sigh* and the word salad begins. (So far still enjoyable story though!)
3 oh 😱😅 FL is 20 lol damn - go girl!
7 oh interesting FL saved her family from ruin. The Xu guy knows but does her own family?!
8 FL’s dad & legitimate mother tbh both seem really great. (Although why does the mom consider FL a “soft thorn”?) I wonder what Xu YueJia (ML I’m assuming/he has to be) is like ❤️💯 “Since Wen Ye had decided to live a carefree life in this lifetime, she had to ensure that half of her heart always belonged to herself, completely and solely.”
10 Dammit I agree with the commenter - most bland wedding night description ever. Just calling it a “bout of passionate intimacy” then each rolling over to sleep in their own quilt. Oh! 😱🙊😹 he’s a ~one minute man and it was bad sex! 😱😹☠️💯 oh damn since they were both awake & he initiated speaking to her she suggested another round. lol seems the subsequent ones were satisfactory 💪💯
18 omg the meal between FL & her little step son at her return home 😹☠️ I was snort laughing ❤️ And lol is FL treating her husband lowkey highkey as a sex toy?
19 😹☠️ the comment saying it’s like the roles are reversed & it’s as if XYJ is being asked to serve his wife made me literally throw back my head in laughter. (That’s exactly what I was thinking!) Oh my GOD he asks her HOW MANY TIMES?!? 😹😹☠️ her love of teasing/gently tormenting kids
20 😹☠️ the end of the chapter lol I’m snort laughing again. It means she disdains this stingy husband who judged her right?! 😹💯
21 (😿 but why did she run from/ignore the kid?) wait did XYJ hide something in the books or are they all dry texts?! Oh lol silver & gold 😹😹☠️ this husband just got a reward of tea & snacks
28 lol I’m glad she finally let poor little Xu YuXuan on the swing - I was stressed!
29 on the one hand it’s funny none of the kids enjoy studying. But on the other hand XYX isn’t even 2 yet! Also I wonder if this oldest aunt will be a problem. Enjoy your countryside retreat, FL!
30 ok XYX’s attachment to her is SO CUTE
36 heh was thrown for a sec then realized 🤦🏻♀️ for once an actual aunt is being called a concubine likely cuz MTL sweet NYE meal And lol to the eldest aunt being FL’s kindred spirit 😹💯
66 yikes word salad
71 !! … guy has caught feelings?! Dunno if it’s the transition - so much isn’t said, I was a bit lost here. Seems … (for now) he wants more & she’s… a no?
Feels like part of 72 was missing
74 😹☠️ these two parents
77(?) WHAT DID FL DO TO ML?! (Also i didn’t note the c but I really like that he’s the one taking BC)
80 ok I am actually fed up with how often the text is wrong/says the opposite thing. Context makes it obvious but … ugh
84 😅 seems like she sexed him good for his birthday. Or more … 😏 he sexed her good 💯
85 lol oh so they roleplay?! Heh and their improving interactions ❤️💯
88 lol was going to say it’s sweet he’s taken to brewing tea for her. But then the end with the snowman covered in green pine branches 😹☠️
90 gah! Word salad!!! So … YXY’s dad is … a relative of ML? (Like he can’t have married his … ~sister?!?!?!?!) WTF? Like even if they never touched… no. Although ugh having read a spoiler now I am sad they never have a kid. Like I respect her choice & I’m glad he does too but before it was okay cuz he already had a son. Man though, considering this is ancient China… XYJ might be the best ML. Seriously.
91 omg their role play 😹☠️💯
92 … wait ok ML *did*… marriage of convenience his older sister?! O.o (but she had a different identity at the time. OBVIOUSLY) And awww FL’s bio mom & sister treat her so well ❤️
94 😹☠️💯 ML constantly trying to seduce FL
Argh 95 again TOO VAGUE
96 lol both funny yet I feel bad at how “negligent” these parents are lol they have no problem just leaving him to ride his donkey while they go off to play
97 [“extra?”] Oops forgot to note time jumps, went to YXY being 4 and now he’s 6…
99 … more extras uh WTF did … we miss the end of the book?!?
103 Ok but these Lu YaoXin & Xu MingZhe childhood interactions are adorable. I’d been thinking throughout the book what a great couple they are…
O.o ok I went back & it really did end just that freaking super abruptly c96 WTF dude
