The Virginia Governess

Rate this book
In the last years of the American Civil War, on a plantation in Middle Georgia, Charlotte Carson is living with her parents-in-law, Patsy and Father Joe, when Patsy dies from an epileptic seizure.

In the aftermath of her death, Father Joe meets widow Marion Shiflet, a conniving woman with a reputation for cruelty.

When Father Joe learns that Sherman is marching through Georgia, he fears for the safety of his family.

Amidst the turmoil of the war he goes on to make a grave mistake, leaving Marion in charge of his home.

Charlotte and Rosey must find resources within themselves to survive the war and bring their loved ones back.

As Charlotte continues to teach her nieces and nephews on the Georgia plantation, she receives letters from her husband, Joseph, which trouble her.

Soon after, Lee surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse.

Charlotte waits for her husband to return.

A new future hangs in the balance for the slaves and there is hope for freedom and new partnerships.

But what will that future be, for everyone?

The letters in this book are authentic, written by the author’s great grandfather to his wife, Charlotte Briggs Carson. Capt. Carson is remembered in history as the man who led the charge during the Battle of Fort Stedman, which is the last battle Gen. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia won.

Liz Carson Keith is a lifestyle editor and freelance writer. She lives in the USA.
