If you have ever had occasion to live near a Mockingbird, you know that he starts singing in early spring. He begins by mimicking the notes of other birds he has heard, but as the spring goes on, he picks up other sounds including sirens, beepers, whistles, and other tones he regularly hears. Everyday he adds these new songs to his repertoire until he finds a mate.
In August of 1999, the words ran from my pen as if I were a Mockingbird. This book is due to that spring of creativity, although it began in the summer. The poems herein are focused mainly on nature and partly on simple reflections on life in general. Finally, the rush slowed and the muse grew quiet. I had found a book.
Mockingbird is a collection of simple rhymes meant for a minute of relaxation. You'll find little symbolism here and few, if any profound ideas. My hope is that these poems will leave you with a smile or a thought that will help carry you through the rest of your day.
Linda Jenkinson is privileged to live along one of the most beautiful areas of the Upper Mississippi River, the coulee of Winona, MN. She lives there with her husband, Ed, their Airedale Terrier, Bailey, a green-cheeked conure (a type of small parrot) named Amigo, three tortoises (two Sulcatas and one Russian), and two Green Pythons (which thankfully stay in their comfy enclosure). Besides caring for their pets, other interests include piano, movies, gardening, and walking.
The author is truly a poetic soul. Writing this time of easy going thoughts on nature and general life musings and of course love. Some of the poems are rather quaint and some are even funny, like Ladies Don't Fart, in which she says "Ladies don't fart, they retire, with the vapors, and stay out of sight"
I rather enjoyed Goin' to the Farm where she says she wants to go, "and you- if you wanna come too." She even had a couple of pieces touch on her writing in On Waking and My Pencil. As a poet myself, I could definitely relate to her feelings in On Waking where she talks about being hit with inspiration in the middle of her slumber, but when she wakes they are no longer there. Something I too have battled with.
Most of the pieces are rhyming or near rhyming and she crafts beautiful words about nature, birds, sounds, seasons etc. I found favorites in the ones I already mentioned, as well as, Raindrops or Teardrops, Balance, Four Seasons & Mocking Bird. All in all this was a very enjoyable and light read. I loved it!
