The Lafayette Escadrille

Rate this book
This book deserves the title of definitive history of the famed Lafayette Escadrille, the American combat pilots who fought for the French in World War I. The author was the son of a World War I combat pilot and a World war II veteran himself. I fdound this book to be very well-written, visually descriptive, and exciting. The author's character descriptions of the pilots are very detailed and personal.

The writer H.M. Mason, Jr. provides an extensively researched history of the Lafayette Escadrille and the American pilots who flew for the French during WWI. I highly encourage anyone interested history, early aviation, the Lafayette Escadrille ,and the Lafayette Flying Corps to read this book.

Just reading through all of the biographies of the men who belonged to the Escadrille left me with more than just a sense of history. The members of this flying group loved flying, loved freedom, and dedicated themselves to fight a war, one which they volunteered to help in any way the could. Mason did a HUGH amount of research for this project and it shows. The images of the pilots serve to highlight their bios. If you appreciated detailed history, you need to read Mason's coverage of the Lafayetter Escadrille. Barbara H. Schultz
