Scene Loser - The True Story Of The Grunge Underground is the first book by Action Swingers main man Ned Hayden published on his own 5.2.62 imprint. It chronicles the years 1987-1993 when Ned managed the CBGB Record Canteen then worked at Caroline Records founding the Primo Scree label before leaving to play in the Action Swingers full-time until their ultimate demise. In between, Ned encounters a who’s who of the underground grunge scene on both sides of the Atlantic.

I own upwards of 1000 Music bios. This is in the top ten.

Why? Much like Kathleen Hanna's book, it's delivered in 'hit and run' style. A paragraph where others bore with chapters, excitement condensed into every truth-filled page.

Ned's band, the mighty Action Swingers were worth a few thousand Soundgardens IMO, and this book is worth a few thousand trad rock yawnfest bios.

It's honest, it's riveting, it's jaw-droppingly real.

Be transported back to CBGBs, post punk but during Grunge. Ned's day job at Caroline Records gets a great telling, too.

Sure, it's a slim tome, but good things come in small packages!
