Kora & the Tower: Gods & Damsels

Rate this book
Kora’s first taste of divine power feels like drowning in starlight. Her second makes her want to tear down the heavens themselves.

Raised behind walls where roses bloom eternal and shadows dare not linger, she was meant to be the God of Light’s perfect sacrifice. But when Aurelian comes to claim his creation, he discovers his holy vessel is already cracked—and something inside is waiting to break free.

In the Lord of Nightmare’s realm of endless night, Kora learns from Dartagnan that true power isn’t holy—it’s hungry, it’s all-devouring, it sings in her bones.

Each taste twists her into something that should not exist. A goddess unshackled.

But there’s a reason gods bind what they fear. A reason some doors are sealed with both light and shadow. And when Kora finally breaks free, she’ll learn that some chains were keeping her safe—and some monsters were caged for a reason.

Gods & Damsels is a standalone duet within the Twilight & Thorn series. It isn’t necessary to read Monsters & Maidens first, but doing so will deepen the world and its tangled myths.

I read this book for an arc read. The whole first half I was thinking that the writing was very flowery and way too embellished. It took so long to get through the descriptions to get to any plot. Well, the author left her literal chat gpt notes in the chapters the further I got along. Direct copy past from Ai. Here’s one of the passages:

“I can enhance the scene to make dartagnons marking of Kora with his spiderweb mark more visceral and dramatic. Here’s a revised version”

Hard to review this book when it was written by AI and not a person, but I’ll try. The plot was bland, the characters were unlikable, and the resolution didn’t make any sense. It’s kind of pitiful to use AI to write something and still have it be awful.

I read the ARC version of this book. I DNF'd at 54%.

In the first half, I found the language far too flowery for my taste, but I was still interested in the plot so I stuck it out because I wanted to see where the story would go. (I did not read the other two books, so I was giving this book a lot of grace when it came to plot holes and stuff that might have been explained in the two I did not read.)

However, as I continued through the book, I started to notice what I thought were notes for her editor that I have now come to realize are just ChatGPT, which I assume either wrote the entire book or had a large hand in editing it.

I am honestly so disappointed that someone would claim to be an author and not put the work and effort into writing and editing their own book, and I would never recommend that anyone pay actual money for this.

Examples of these "notes" include:

"I'll enhance the scene to make Kora's return to awareness more intense and give Lumina a stronger reaction, plus create a better lead-up to Aurelian's arrival: "

"“Looking at this section, I can see how the staccato rhythm creates dramatic tension but becomes a bit repetitive with the frequent "not a" and "they did not" constructions. Here's my revised version that maintains the impactful pacing while making it feel more natural:”

Thank you BookSprout and Kate Seger for sending me this advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

IMPORTANT: The author used GenAI to revise several scenes, and left the AI prompts in. I found a total of five AI prompts in my copy of the book that I received from BookSprout. There was one in chapter 12, two in chapter 18, one chapter 19, and one in chapter 20.

I really wanted to love this book. The magic and battle between light and dark intrigued me. I did really like the characters. They were all distinct and had their own personalities, strength, and flaws.

This was supposed to be a standalone, but the worldbuilding was hugely lacking. I still don't really understand how the magic system works at all. It might have been better if I had read the other books, but if it is being marketed as a standalone, I should be able to read it on it's own. I kept finding myself zoning out while reading, and I really can't pinpoint why. It never really grabbed me.

Sadly there were so many spelling and grammar errors, that I kept having to re-read pages to figure out what was going on. I usually don't have an issue with there being small errors in an ARC, but this was excessive.

I received an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I ended up DNF'ing this at 30% because I was confused, and it was making me angry. Looking at other reviews, I see that while this is billed as Book 1, there is a duology prequel that you have to read in order for it to make sense.

Furthermore, I'm a little sad to not only see that the author used an AI assist, but when people bring up how problematic that is, she's doubling down instead of listening to her readers.

"Kora’s first taste of divine power feels like drowning in starlight."
What? That makes no sense and sounds very chatGPT.
Now, if you say at any moment, all life on Earth can be wiped out in seconds from a gamma ray burst from a nearby star, that I understand. But that's the closest thing I can think of to "drowning in starlight". That's not a good thing.

I loved this book! I received an ARC copy for an honest review, and truthfully, I loved it. There were parts I couldn't understand and a few plot holes because i havent read the other two books, but thats my fault and not the authors. There are also definitely parts that made me have to take a break because of my emotions, but that's a good think for me! There's definitely some editing issues ive seen, but as I said, I received an ARC copy, so I was fully aware that there'd be mishaps and mistakes and I cannot wait until I'm able to get my hands on a physical copy of the finished version!

Kora didn’t ask for power. She was built for obedience, polished like porcelain to be divine property. But let me tell you—once the cracks start showing? That girl shines in ways the gods should be terrified of.

I devoured this book. It’s the kind of dark, beautiful, soul-hungry tale that wraps around your ribs and doesn’t let go. If you’ve ever loved a story where a trapped, manipulated heroine claws her way out—not to escape, but to ascend—then buckle up. Kora isn’t just breaking chains; she’s unraveling fate itself and daring you to look away while she does it.

Kate Seger’s prose is lush, like ink spilled over velvet. The world feels ancient and reverent but also cruel, like a temple with bloodstains in the corners no one dares clean. Light is a lie here—honeyed, weaponized, and holy for all the wrong reasons. And Aurelian, the God of Light? Don’t even get me started. If righteousness could smother you, it would wear his face.

Enter Dartagnan. The Lord of Nightmares, the monster they warned her about, the thing hidden in shadow—and I loved him. Morally gray? More like morally starless. But somehow, he's more real than the so-called god who forged her. Watching Kora learn from him, challenge him, match him? That’s the kind of dangerous alchemy I live for.

This book is brimming with everything I crave—forced proximity, masked court intrigue, the kind of twisted romance that makes you question who the real monster is, and power that hums like a storm under your skin.

Kora’s journey isn’t about being chosen. It’s about choosing—to reclaim, to destroy, to rise. And that moment when she decides she’s not just a vessel, not just a girl behind glass? Whew. I swear I felt the stars tremble.

So yeah. Read it. And when you get to the part where the tower burns, just know—I was already cheering.

Hidden power
Battle between light and dark
Sheltered FMC

I was given a free copy of this in exchange for my honest review.
Forewarning this is not a standalone. You absolutely must read the first 2 books about Kora's parents in order to fully understand Kora's story. The story imagined was fantastic. I loved the battle between light and dark and the fact that Kora was continously fighting to forge her own path. She has been sheltered from her destiny her whole life. On her 18th birthday she is claimed by the God of Light as his bride due to an agreement her parents made before she was born.
The God of Light wants to erase her and make her his perfect vessel. The God of Darkness offers freedom to make her own choice while not giving her all the information which is its own form of control.
Kora decides she wants to forge her own path choosing neither, but something in between. The problem is she doesn't understand the path she is choosing. While there is a little romance this is not a romance story.
The world building needs heavy work and it felt like there really wasn't much character development either. The copy I received had numerous errors, including missing lines and full paragraphs being repeated just slightly reworded. This made it very hard to get through at times. I do not know if the published copy resolves these errors or not but the copy I have needed serious editing done and was borderline unreadable at times. The story did keep me pushing through despite the errors hence the 3 stars instead of less. If the errors have been resolved in the writing then this is definitely a book I recommend just make sure you read the first 2 before. Otherwise you will not understand much of what is happening.

Overall rating: 2
Overall story: 3.5
World building: 2
Writing style: 2
Magic system: 3

The story as a whole I would rate around a three there are a lot of great elements within this book. There’s a unique magic system between light and dark and what it means to be in the in between. Additionally, there is a strong FMC story and how she overcomes giving the option of two cages, and instead finding a path of her own choosing.

However, I had a hard time imagining this magic system and the world building as a whole. I was having a hard time feeling connected to the characters whether I did or didn’t like the character, whether they were a good character or a bad character. And I really wanted to feel connected because like I said I think this book has a lot of good elements, so I was looking forward to feeling emotions come out of me as I’m reading these pages but unfortunately, I just felt a bit disconnected. So the overall flow of the book hindered my reading experience. So my experience as a reader was often confused and disconnected, giving my rating on the reading experience reading a one.

I was under the impression this could be read as a standalone and I don’t think that was right lol. I didn’t read the first two prior to this and there were things that were revealed by the end of the book that was presented to us at the beginning of the book as a mystery and then we the reader was just told what happened with no back story? (I assume because that’s in the previous books but it’s part of her story now… shouldn’t we hash that out a bit?) There was no digging or investigation which one would assume would be based on how big a deal it was at first? Which is part of my next issue I felt like I was being pulled to one scene then the next with no proper transitioning and I felt like I was missing a sentence or a scene between pages.
Despite all this I did enjoy the story, I just couldn’t put too much thought into it and as a critical thinker it just bugged me a bit.
I also know this is supposed to be a slow burn (??) but other than her power and resembling…nature, I would have liked to see more of a connection between the MMCs and FMC. Or am I off in my perception?

“balance cannot be destroyed – only forgotten for a time”

Kora and the Tower was a uniquely written story. It was poetic, detailed, and atmospheric. Steeped in struggle, emotion, and mystery I was completely captivated.

Kate Seger presents a fantasy tale where Kora, the FMC, is posed as a damsel where she refuses to accept her only options are to be confined in chains and gilded cages. This is very much a story of coming into oneself while trying to discern truth from pretty lies and to find a balance of true power.

Is there anyone who truly has Kora’s best interests at heart, or is everyone on a mission to obtain all the power? This story is merely a piece in a magically crafted world of tangled myths. I cannot wait to see what is next in store.

It is the first book in the Gods & Damsels duet within the Twilight & Thorn series. This is a standalone duology, but it is highly recommended to read the Monsters & Maidens duology first.

This author has been under fire for using ChatGpt, but I can affirm that the story is all of her own creation. she has never sugar coated that she edits with ai, and also, her actual vocabulary and descriptors are vibrant. She went to school to be a writer. I am an ARC reader for her and several other authors. and the ARC reader who has bashed her openly on here should be considered a terrible source, as they broke a contract to badmouth this author, and to me, that sort of person can't be trusted.

On a different note, I think the story was excellent. It showed the struggle between light, dark, and wanting to maintain one's own identity. It was fun and suspenseful. I recommend it if you like stories that aren't all about a perfect happy ending. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.

This was my first read by Kate Seger. I understand that ARC copies are not the final copies of the book so there was a few errors, missing pieces, and notes in what I read. But even so, this book has potential to be a really good book. I'll go check out the final book on Kindle and see what major and minor differences there was between the arc and final print. The storyline was, actually really good, Kora wasn't stuck up or a brat, she was just sheltered and confused most of the time. Honestly I understand most of Kora's decisions. There was barely any romance in this book and I don't mind because it doesn't need romance to be a good fantasy book. Overall I will edit my review and my rating once I've read the final product.

CONFIRMED AI USE

This novel is confirmed to be made with generative AI. Though the cover has determined to be only 2% likely AI generated, there are many images within that have been scanned and tested with 98% and 99% likeliness.

The novel also presents with ChatGPT prompts. Even going through the "read sample" section on Amazon, it's very evident there is no human voice behind the words. It's also quite alarming that, though the author claims the book has been through a human editor, they aren't truly credited, unless they're a genre of music.

Please, for the love of all that is creative, write your own books; or, at least have the decency to replace your name on the cover with ChatGPT.

I’m so excited to be visiting Eldritch Manor again 🥹🤍
I truly love the way Kate writes her fantasy stories. They are so detailed and you immediately are immersed into the realms she creates.

Kora and the Tower is a standalone that intertwines with characters from Monsters and Maidens(Beauty&Darius). You don’t have to read those in order to read this story but doing so will definitely help deepen the connection to the tale.

Kora is a strong fmc who shows you she is no damsel in distress and is learning who she truly is.

**ARC** Kate Seger

Boy, was this book a story. At first I thought Kora was going to act like a spoilt brat but she ended up being just scared and uninformed. This book was definitely different with very emotional attachments. I really started out Dartagnon and Kora but after seeing how Eryck tried to save Kora from going with Lumina. You can feel the love that Eryck has for Kora but I don’t understand why she doesn’t feel something for him other than what I think is friendship. I can’t wait for the next book and this is definitely a 5 out of 5 stars. Kudos.

This is my first read by Kate Seger and I believe this can be read as a stand alone. It is more of a slow burn, enemies to lover and recently I've really been into dark fantasy and this book did a great job at it. Once i got past the world building it was easier for me to read because though some people enjoy reading the world building part, I'm the opposite. But that's just me.

There's magic, gods and power. Kora who is our main female main character is strong and is about her discovering herself and making choices for herself. Her development in this book is great, I love an awesome lead. It kept me reading and wanting to know what happen next in each chapters.

💟This book was made for me! I was so into it and its been really forever since a book pulled me in so hard. I cant believe people try to hurt this incredible author with low stars. They should do some research and see almost all editors use ai now. I read even the big publishers do. Maybe get with the times so you can stop abusing authors. K I’ve been a fan of Kate’s writing since that one serial site. She is true to her stye and I cant get enough. Hey Kate if you ever read your reviews dont let these mferz get to you with their mob mentality. Youre the real deal. And this book curled around me and left me smiling and excited for the next book ✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️🔥

I enjoyed this book, even without having read the other two books in the series. I feel like having read the other two would have definitely given me more insight about the background story. The characters were really interesting and who doesn’t love an enemies to lovers trope? The first half of the book was really slow paced for me but the action and pace picked up after that. It ends on a cliffhanger and I’m curious to see what unfolds in the next book. The author was very descriptive and really sets the scene for you. Fans of the ACOTAR series would definitely enjoy this.

This book is a roller coaster of emotion. It never lets you think or breathe before the next twist or turn. It had me yelling at my phone. Kora made choices that were just for her. I can't wait to see what comes next for her. There are so many forces pulling at Kora and she doesn't know everything that she needs to. This is a great story about trying to figure out who you are without all the information that you need. So making the truest choice to you may not always be the best choice.

I was BLOWN AWAY. Kora is a strong, feisty, "blaze my own trail" kind of gal who takes no shit. She swatted misbehaving gods aside like flies and opted to save ailing characters instead.
The writing of this book was exceptional, Kate Seger writes with such potent detail that the imagery created is like a movie. This world she builds is so vivid and fascinating that you simply cannot avoid being sucked in.
I know I'll be reading this one over again!

The beginning was slow and a bit confusing, but after reflecting, it puts you in the same sort of head space as the MC is in. It has a lot of ups and downs and good world building. A good read, one I feel that if you go back to read again, it will reveal things you missed and see with better understanding.
