Review to come soon. My first read of 2014, and technically I read book 3 before I read book 2. That was a fail on my part. >.< (I never had the galley from NG and pretty much ended up buying it from Barnes and Noble with a gift card.) Nonetheless, I think Erik Olsen might be one of my favorite middle grade authors to watch in terms of how entertaining the stories surrounding the adventures of Flin and the gang are. I love the attention to detail and the action/adventure/exploration that these novels have.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be in a giant Jellyfish. Well Flin Newby has experienced it. Flin's Destiny The Garden of Lost Souls has many elements in it. Jon Erik Olsen does a really good job of writing Irish accents in the book. One example is when he writes Mr Luftins lines, like " Me boat propeller cut er' clean off...". Olsen does a very good job at making the bad guys sound bad. For example, " The whiny human, sir?", "YES! THE HUMAN, BRING HIM!". Lastly, Jon does a great job at showing the changes of the human behavior in captivity or under a dangerous ruler. Parcel was once a kid that was spoiled by his father, but at the end of the book he becomes a heartless jerk that cares for no one except himself, just like blade. This book is recommended for people who have read the first book of the Flin's Destiny series and/or for people who like books that have mysteries, adventures, love stories, and mythical creatures.

Garden of Lost Souls
Flin's Destiny Series Book 2
By Erik Olsen

Deep in the underworld lies a long forgotten secret...

The Garden of Lost Souls is an exciting sequel to Cobble Cavern. More than a year has passed since the tour bus full of students and their teachers fell into the deep cavern beneath Ireland. Escape from this underworld seems highly unlikely to most of those trapped beneath the surface as they celebrate their second Thanksgiving in Cobble Cavern.

Somehow giant turtles have entered the anemone that protects Cobble Cavern from the ocean above. As the students play games on the turtles an equally large jellyfish creates a wave that knocks Flin and Flowell into the lake. As the jellyfish leaves the safety of the anemone for the depths of the ocean everyone is horrified to see Flin and Flowell trapped within it.

When the jellyfish begins stinging them Flin uses his power to get them out of the jellyfish, but when they break the ocean surface they find themselves in another cavern. As they explore this new cavern they are attacked by a giant scorpion, as they attempt to get away Flin and Flowell throw themselves over a waterfall and separated when the river forks.

Flin soon finds himself in Clover Cavern and in danger from a river of lava. Using his power he manages to save the Cavern and its inhabitants. But treachery runs deep and the cavern's existence is threatened by an act betrayal when the Jadestone is stolen.

Meanwhile Flowell ends being captured by Blade. When Flowell attempts an escape Sump betrays her to Blade. Blade has plans for Flowell - he plans to sell her to the Devil's Garden and Sump is to be her escort to her doom!

Flin, with the help of his new friends Delly and Pepper, heads back home to Cobble Cavern. Along the way they search for clues as to the whereabouts of the missing Jadestone. But instead of information about the Jadestone, Flin learns that Flowell is alive and about to be taken to the Devil's Garden. Flin is determined to save his friend, but he is too late.

As Flin searches for a way to save Flowell he is swept into the wind tunnel and pulled into Cobble Cavern. Rallying the help of Luftin, Pilt, and Cretchit Flin leads a search for Flowell using his ring of destiny as a guide.

Will Flin be able to save Flowell or will they both be lost to the evil of the Devil's Garden?

I found the Garden of Lost Souls to be an enjoyable week-end read full of exciting adventure.

Bring on book 3!

Garden of the Lost Souls by Erik Olsen
4 STARS This series Flin's Destiny series has 5 books in it. Garden of the Lost Souls is book 2. I have only read Garden of the Lost Souls so far and think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the first book first. It can stand alone but I have a feeling it will be better if you read the books in order. A bus load of students are trapped in a world under the ground. The princible thinks they had better start school up and she had a manual with her to study on the field trip. Flin 14 and Flowell get seperated from the rest when they get trapped in the lake. Everyone thinks they have died. Flin and Flowell are in a different part of the underworld and don't know how to get back to thier friends. Things are always happening to them on thier journey and then in the dark they get seperated. Flin meets Skip who tells him the fork of the river that he did not go but Flowell went on a little farther then over a waterfall that no one survives. Skip is a lepercaun but he was thrown out of home. He told Flin that you don't trust anyone even he does not trust himself. To get rid of Flin he shows him how to get out of the area he is in. Flin gets caught and trapped but when an earthquake frightens his capters away he is able to get out. When he sees the lepercauns wrisking thier lives to save the women and children from the lava that starts coming and soon will all be trapped and killed he gets an idea how he can stop the lava and runs back and tells them to get more water as he hurrys with buckets full and starts to build a gully with water the lepercauns are helping and Flinn uses magic and turns the water into a ice wall that saves everyone. The next day the Jadestone that protects Clover Cavern was stolen that Flin's own great grandfather gave to them. So he goes with two lepercauns to find it and return it before others can find Clover Cavern. On thier quest Flin finds out that Flowell is alive but a prisoner he splits off to find her. Everytime something is going right than another thimg happens to someone. It keeps your attention. I look forward to the next book in the series. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley. 07/10/2012 PUB Cedar Fort

Flin and all of his friends are still stuck underground in Cobble Cavern, there's still really no hope of leaving the cavern and their good friends Hepple, Fezzy and Inger. That's okay, but Thanksgivings coming right away and the Flin and his friends miss their families and know that their families have no idea what happened to them. Flin would like to find a way to get back to the surface, but there seems to be no way. One day in Cobble Cavern Lake there are turtles. Not quite sure how they got there, Flin and Flowell join in the fun of riding on them, but disaster strikes and they are sucked out of the anemone wall and into a jellyfish in the middle of the ocean. They are able to escape the jellyfish unharmed, but soon find themselves in yet another cavern, but at least they are together. But being together doesn't last very long as they get thrown into a river and sucked down different branches of the river. Each thinks the other is dead, and neither has any idea how to get back to Cobble Cavern. They both must be brave and risk everything, including their own lives to get back to Cobble Cavern and their friends.

I like the action of these books. I really like that there is a series of books for boys, it doesn't seem like there are very many of those right now. I think the characters and the story line of these books is fun, the one thing that I have issues with in these books is that they are really hard to follow, it seems like they jump from one thing and one person to another with no real continuity. You never know what character you are going to end up "listening" to or where they will be. All in all a fun story, especially for middle grade boys!

I'm sorry, but I stopped reading at chapter six. The plot of this story is so flawed that is isn't worth reading. The first one was poorly written, this one is worse. I had hopes for this story because my little boy really likes it, but I can't endure reading it when there are so many good books waiting to be read.

Flin's journey continues in Book 2 of this wonderfully creative series. If you haven't started this series, you should...as should your kids! It makes me want to begin reading Book 3 "The Earth Time Continuum" right away!

This was a good sequel to the first book. Flin and Flowell have some more adventures. Sump, Ruel, and Parcell show up again.
