Shadows in the Mist

Rate this book
Nicknamed 'the Shadow Reader' for her ability to see ghosts, Dr Porter Biggleswade is a straight-talking paranormal investigator. While Porter's work takes her to the Bronte Parsonage in Haworth, ghostly feuds are the least of her worries. A woman haunted by her living mother; a farmer plagued by spectral ewes; and a developer desperate to evict his mediaeval tenants show Porter that the living are as troubled as the shadows she is investigating. Shadows in the Mist is the first book in Amy Flint's Porter Biggleswade series.

I love a good mystery, and the paranormal is certainly that. I had the idea for my Porter Biggleswade series after moving to York. Porter is a paranormal investigator with a talent for spotting ghosts, a useful skill to have when living in England's most haunted city!

I started in archaeology - Pompeii and the British Museum, before studying forensics; evidently, I delight in searching for clues. Researching and writing about the paranormal seemed the natural next step.

I also indulge my passion for intrigue through Amy Investigates. Extracting fact from fiction, I present my findings in my blog, allowing others to draw their own conclusions.

The University in York (reported to be the most haunted city in England) has received a donation to set up the PIU. The donor wants Porter as part of the team. One problem for Porter and her department, is the University already has a parapsychology department. The staff is not happy that PIU has been set up and is getting better equipment then they have. There is also a lot of competition in this area, apparently. Colleagues are bidding for contracts behind other's backs while flirting with those (specifically Porter) in the running. Some of the "ghosts" aren't ghosts at all. Porter and her intern, Clarice, spend many nights investigating the supernatural complaints. It is dangerous sometimes. Porter gets clobbered in the head, falls and faints a few times. But it is all in a days' or rather a nights' work.

I really enjoyed this book. I like a good ghost story.

I especially liked the story line about the Bronte family; of the Charlotte and Emily family. I really didn't know much about the actual family, so it was fun to learn more about them through the children's shenanigans, and their father's worry over brother Branwell. Did I say one of my favorite all time books is Wuthering Heights? I see some of their story in Wuthering Heights. Most of what is described in Shadows in the Mist about the Bronte family, is based on fact. Not the haunting part. Where they lived, who was in the household, brother Branwell's addiction, even Tabby, their maid.

This first book sets us up for book two: The Haunting of Delavere Hall. I will be reading that soon.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Where to start...

This book was fantastic!!! Not Your normal "Ghost Story'...but a well written novel with something for everyone...

Porter Biggleswade made the move to York to work for PIU(Paranormal Investigation Unit) a newly formed department at All Saints University, Dr Biggleswades addition to the department a non-negotiable request of an Mysterious, anonymous benefactor.
Dr Biggleswade a Shadow Reader so named for her ability to see ghosts aka shadows, Along with her intern they begin to investigate ghostly appearances in and around York! cases involving The Bronte Parsonage, Ghostly Rogue sheep, with many entertaining characters.

A story with amazing descriptions of York and surrounding areas, the life of a Paranormal investigator and the competition between departments and colleagues at university, not only for funding but prestige and acknowledgement.

I really enjoyed how the author incorporated Egyptology and the myth of Isis into this story,(The Feather of truth ritual) Is this why Porter Finds Feathers at the scene of shadow sightings?

I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series, hoping to have a few questions answered! Who Is the Mysterious benefactor? is there a link between Dr Biggleswade and Isis?

A fantastic start to what looks like an awesome series..

Give it a try it has something for everyone!!

This is not your typical ghost story! Porter has recently taken a new position with the PIU unit in York as their new investigator. The story basically follows Porter's life as a paranormal investigator and follows along with her unusual cases. Unlike most people, she can actually see shadows and converse with them. She has to deal with numerous skeptics while trying to solve the cases and of course make them see what's really behind the disturbances. The author also includes wonderful descriptions of York throughout the book as well. This is a great start to a series! I'm looking forward to the next book!

Ghost hunting for sceptics and believers alike. Porter Biggleswade, a paranormal investigator, finds herself tangling with supernatural shadows and more human quirks. Her cases include the mysterious occupants of the Bronte parsonage, a granny with a vendetta, and a flock of terrifying sheep. Feathers, crystals and Sauvignon Blanc add to a sense that life - and death - is out of control. Read it!

An intriguing novel that will keep you turning the pages and make you keen to read the next book in the series! The reader enters the world of Porter Biggleswade, someone who sees much more than those around her. It provides a unique and intellectual (as opposed to frightening) perspective on the existence of ghosts/shadows while, at the same time, it is an entertaining and enjoyable read. It will also be of interest to those who live in, have travelled to, or will travel to, York by prompting them to consider the history of its former inhabitants.

Shadows in the Mist is the first book in the Dr Porter Biggleswade paranormal series. Porter is a paranormal investigator that chases not only troubling spectral mishaps but real life ones as well. A few of her cases include children in the Bronte parsonage, a ghost fight in a construction area, a Mom with a vendetta and spectral ewe. Flint has created the characters with life like ability and "real" conversations so it is very easy to put yourself in the scene with them. This story has characters that are skeptics and believers alike within the same company. You have your rivals that try to sabotage your ability to get a job done, doubters that throw every fact at you that they can and followers that are just "there". Kinda what you face in real life working in an office environment. There are a few mysteries not yet answered but I am sure as the series goes on we will get the full story. This is a fun read and a great start to an awesome series. If you like paranormal stories with a bit of a twist and some humor added, READ IT!!!
