“Lesson A dragon will always catch you when you fall.”
Months have passed since Opal returned to the Shaede Court after defeating the Night Prince and experiencing the epic loss of her family. While so many things seem like they are falling into place for the High Shaedes, Opal must now navigate the dueling affections of her charming faerie lover, Farris, and Edmyn, the handsome and relentless Moon King.
In addition to dealing with all the complications that are revealed about her magical bond, dragons have come out of isolation and attacked the Night Court for no known reason, leaving the faerie realm both puzzled and crippled with fear. Add some drama with the faerie-worshipping wizards in the south and some unusual nightmares plaguing her best friend, and the hard-won peace that Opal and her friends thought they’d achieved begins to quickly unravel, leading them to places they have never been before.
What begins as a journey to discover the truth in Opal’s heart, quickly transforms into a high stakes quest, which involves a magical rock hunt, dragons with bad attitudes, wizards who become family, and a spicy love triangle that wants to be so much more. Welcome back to the Seam, where magic abounds, dysfunction festers, and love grows.
Shaedes of Fire is the second book in the Soul Magic Series, and will delight all lovers of dark romantasy, complicated characters, colorful world building, and epic magic. This is the hangover cure to the Fourth Wing and ACOTAR series!
Jenny Grimes writes fantasy romance novels that focus on the blurred lines between worlds, the darkness you’ll find in all of them, and the love that resides there too. She creates her characters and spins her stories from her home in the human realm, where she raises her three little book dragons with her husband, and spends a healthy amount of time reading, travelling, and creating art.
I read this twice back to back because I was so in my feels about this book and I don't know how it was possible but I think it was even better the second read thru! I don't even know where to start...this was perfection! We got a deep look at the relationship of the FMC and the 2 MMCs, the struggle to find their cohesion and then to live in their bliss was euphoric to read and be a part of. The spice scenes were written so poetically and couldn't have been more perfect for what was going on emotionally with the characters. My favorite faerie gets her time to shine and doesn't disappoint! I wish we could have seen more of her transformation. I liked how the dragons and wizards that were introduced in this book didn't over power what was already established in book 1. They were great side characters to add to an already incredible journey. And that ending...I may have saw it coming but the emotional rollercoaster of those couple pages was written so so good! I know this doesnt get released to the world until June, but besties...add this to your TBR now (along with book 1 if you haven't already) and prepare for a wild ride!
This series is shaping up to be one of the BEST romantasy adventures ever.
It's unique but these characters feel familiar and like family after the first. If you like your books spicy but having major depth- this is your series.
I finished this a lot quicker than I expected I would (TLDR: I'm incredibly slow at reading e-books lol) the book has a really nice medium/fast pace to it which helped me not want to put it down. One thing Jenny does so beautifully in her books are characters, each one has so much depth and development throughout that you can't help but fall in love with them, and be invested in them. The second thing she does well is the plot-to-spice ration. I always appreciate a book that can deliver both in dept plot with magic and world building, with lots of good spicy scenes.
We get introduced to a lot of new lore and magical realms including Wizards and my personal favorite Dragons! The book is a bit of an emotional roller coaster so you have been warned. 👀😂
Overall a very strong sequel and I'm excited to see where this story will go next.
Book 2 in the Soul Magic series! this book dives right back in with the High Shaedes trying to navigate the new world that has come from the events of book 1. Opal, Farris, and Edmyn figure... alot.. out. Bahah. But amidst it all, we get to know more about Leyanna. You really get into the lives of the characters and feel like you know them and are a part of their world. Also, we loved getting to see dragons, even if they are kinda bossy. Can't wait to see what comes next with our High Shaede friends.
We get to follow along with Opal after, in book 1, she shared her soul with not 1 but 2 lovely men. After defeating the Night Prince, Opal decided to return to the Shaede court, where she feels she belongs, even as it hurts her to leave Edmyn behind in his night court as the new prince. Opal and Farris are enjoying each other, and seem to be happy. What Opal soon realizes, is that she is not whole, not while Edmyn is in the night court, away from her. Being separated from her bonded mate is like living a half life. When the night court is visited with destruction at the hands of a dragon, the Shaede court's peacetime is broken, so the high shaedes have to make the risky trek into Corynthia, accompanied by Edmyn, and Farris, as well as a new friend they picked up (not intentionally) from the Wizard realm.
This is Opal's biggest fear, having both her lovers on a mission together, when tensions were already high as she tries to wade through the murky waters of making both men happy, while also hoping they don't try to kill each other.
A lot happens in this story, and the reader gets to learn even more history about some of the much older generations of Shaedes. Without giving anything away, it very much does involves dragons. The group basically has to go on a mission to appease the dragon's due to damage that was done by Ciaran's undead army, the success of this mission will mean an avoidance of war with the dragon realm, and is therefore extremely important to maintain peace within the Seam.
I really felt bad for Opal initially, feeling like she had to almost decide between Edmyn and Farris, trying to give into her temptation with Edmyn, while also trying not to hurt Farris in the process, is a tricky situation. Farris honestly annoys me in the first half of the story, he knows full well what the soul magic bond feels like between him and Opal, and to get angry that Opal needs time with Edmyn too, is just childish. Farris feels selfish to me, and the fact that Opal is trying so hard not to hurt his feelings, again, just annoyed me. Like, go for the morally grey character already! We all know you want to, and the bond and experience that Opal shared with Edmyn, even through to the end of this story, I feel is a closer bond than her and Farris will ever share. Not to downplay the fact that she does have the same soul magic bond with Farris, but still, I just like Edmyn more.
This story is filled with so many different interesting characters! A new character I don't want to mention so you can meet her first hand. You also learn more about Edmyn and his personality, and how he is even more compassionate than the shaede court seems to be. With his compassion, he open's Opal's eyes to the way that the High Shaedes need to treat all the different realms within the seam so they can all do and be better.
This is a great second book within the series, the ending is tragic, and amazing, and worth every second of reading. I also feel there are some really deep connections that we get to experience between different characters in this story, that just hit you in the feels. I cannot wait for the next book and to read more about these characters and this world!
Thank you to the author for a copy of this book.

First I want to say thank you to Jenny Grimes for letting me ARC read! I love seeing your journey as an author and seeing your books come to life!
I wanted to love this book, I really tried to love this book. Shaedes of Power (book 1) was an instant 5 star for me and my first book of the year. So I was expecting to be absolutely blown away by Shaedes of Fire. And while the story itself was good it fell flat in a lot of places for me.
I love a good “why choose” but this was more like she couldn’t choose? Opal, the FMC, clearly loves them both but no one made any actions to get the guys to stop being jerks to each other. You guys are all mated. Figure it out. It felt very teenage angsty. And there really wasn’t much dialogue between the characters to build up the relationship itself. We needed more!
The plot kept shifting and changing and adding new characters and side quests to the point that I forgot what they were supposed to be doing. What was even the point of the whole story? It jumped a lot and made it confusing to follow in alot of places.
Then the syntax was confusing and my brain kept tripping. It went from eloquent almost Victorian Era speaking to modern colloquial phrases. It felt confusing and made it hard to follow.
In the end I honestly feel like this needed to be a side novella for Leyanna’s story. There wasn’t enough focus on the main story and the FMC/MMC’s. I loved seeing Leyanna come into her own self and self discovery but it needed to be a smaller side story, not the whole book.
Overall I enjoyed the book but it needed a few more things and maybe some things removed. I will be reading book 3!

3.25 ⭐️ First, I want say thank you for sending me this book as an ARC 🫶🏾 I really enjoyed book one and I had such a high hopes for this book, but it fell flat for me. I had a hard time connecting to the characters and I feel the characters I got in book one were not the same ones we got in book two. I feel Opal doesn’t even know who she is as a person and the back and forth with Farris and Edmyn was exhausting and then boom they are all best buds and it just didn’t make sense to me. I also cannot stand cheating and the fact Leyanna cheated on Lennyx her “mate” in not even two days was wild to me. The fact everyone was just okay with it was just wow. I feel things could have gotten explained a lot better and there could have been more action in the areas that needed it. I did enjoy the dragons though and the entrance of the side character Nell even though she was killed off 😩

What an excellent continuation of the story! In this story you get to see even more of the dynamics of the group with the High Shaedes and are even introduced to new characters. My personal favorite being Katie ( IYKYK)
I loved how much plot Jenny was able to fit in only 27 chapters! The dragons were such an interesting addition to the story that just left me wanting to know more about them.
This story is full of passion, courage, friendship and adventure that will have you laughing, sitting on the edge of your seat with anticipation and even shedding a tear or two. I can't wait to see how this story will end!
I enjoyed the first book in this series alot more and i think mainly because of the last 20% or so. Overall the action and adventure was great and love the addition of dragons. It was funny seeing how Opal’s mini harem were trying to one up each other but also annoyed with Opal for dragging her feet instead of having an open discussion with them both.
I am blessed to have received an ARC of this book!
I love how easy this series is to read, it just flows so well and makes easy to follow.
All characters really are nicely fleshed out with their own personalities that shine through with every interaction.
Obviously a fave part of this book for me is….DRAGONS. I’m a vampire and dragon girly through and through, so anything involving them is chefs kiss! I loved how thought out the dragon breeds seem to be, which brings me to my next thing.
Lore in this series is done so nicely. It’s easy to follow and dropped in a way that makes sense instead of just info dumping. This book has a lot of interesting lore added to it about other parts of the Seam, which I enjoyed learning about. I knew that they were kind of the protectors of the seam, but I didn’t think too hard about what else may be out there besides what we had seen.
Romance!! Excellent. I’m not usually a why choose girly, but Opal, Farris, and Edmyn are just wonderful. I love how I can really feel how essentially both men are to Opal, and it was intense watching this fold out in this book!
Drama!! I won’t say what the drama is because duh spoilers but LET ME TELL YOU THIS MY MOUTH WAS ON THE FLOOR. That’s all I’ll say.
Overall, great addition to the series and I look forward to what else is to come.
Just like Shaedes Of Power, this story captivated me from the very beginning. Jenny does such an amazing job writing the friendships and relationships in this story. I was honestly disappointed about the fact we did not get to see more of Leyanna becoming a dragon rider. There were definitely some moments in the book that I feel could have been eliminated to make room for that. I adored the addition of Nell to the cast, her character had such a great personality. I was incredibly sad about the plot twist at the end though. All in all this is a great book, I just felt the plot got overshadowed by Opal, Farris and Edmyn trying to figure their stuff out.

Jenny Grimes has done it again! Shaedes of Fire is book two of the Soul Magic series and I think I love it even more than the first. The amount of story, emotion, and character growth packed into less than 300 pages blows my mind. This story follows Opal’s little family of Glory, Dru, Lennyx, Leyanna, Edmyn, Farris, and the newest member of the group, a witch by the name of Nell. After a dragon attacks the Shadow Lands, the group heads off on an adventure to find out why and try to restore peace. As can be expected, this adventure is much more than they bargained for. If you love found family, this series is sure to deliver. Each character feels like someone I would want to know. They are all beautifully flawed and healing in their own way. There is not a single character that I feel like I fully understand, but I am dying to know more about them all and I’ve only told you about the faeries so far! Don’t get me started on Katie, the sassy, headstrong dragon that I didn’t get nearly enough of. I cannot wait for book three, I can tell that Jenny has so much more story to tell us and I need to know what happens next!
I can’t even! I needed to cry myself to sleep before I could review this. No I still can’t. Jenny is the whip lash giving queen with her emotional rollercoaster writing! She’s possessed my heart with it and I’ve been lost in her brilliant mind. Delve into this world and let your heart break with me! Delve in and let your mind expand. Delve in and let your TBR wait!

The wizard realm makes it's debut along with the fierce dragon court, and both have surprises lurking around every corner. One minute there's a How to Train your dragon moment, and the next an incredible display of magical powers that reminded me of Harry Potter.
Mrs.Grimes never shies away from romance, and it is a very important part of every story she writes. She promised more romance for the sequel, and she definitely delivered more spice with why choose moments.
Fire queen Leyanna is back, and better than ever!🔥 She learns more about her herself, and is always ready to face any challenges no matter the danger. The surprise towards the end of the book with a certain someone had me completely shocked, and I hope there's closure for this specific character.
The plot twist at the end of the story had me on the edge of my seat with that one decision that had to be made.😱 Mrs.Grimes really said let's end the story on a bittersweet moment, and I have no words for just how speechless I truly was.
Dark romantasy reader's add this stunning book to your tbr if you like:
1.Vampires,fae,wizards,and dragons. 2. Why choose romance 3.Found family 4. Unique magical worlds, and color magic. 5. Fated love 6.High stakes

Shaedes of Fire is the second book in the Soul Magic Series, bringing us back to a world of powerful magic, courtly intrigue, and fiery romance.
Opal, now back at the Shaede Court after defeating the Night Prince, finds herself entangled in a love triangle between Farris, her charismatic faerie lover, and Edmyn, the persistent Moon King. But romantic complications aren't her only problem, dragons have suddenly emerged from isolation to attack the Night Court, shaking the faerie realm to its core. As Opal investigates the growing dangers, new challenges arise: faerie-worshipping wizards, her best friend’s troubling nightmares, and a mysterious magical bond she doesn’t fully understand. What begins as an emotional journey soon turns into a high-stakes adventure involving mythical creatures, powerful artifacts, and unexpected alliances.
Read this in one day, no joke. It's captivating, entertaining and just hits you with an ending that you may see coming - but doesn't make it any less of an emotional whirlwind. The addition of the dragons and witches is done seamlessly, as if they were there the whole time. I honestly need more Plum and Katie in my life. The character development just gets even better and the way that Jenny writes Opals relationships and friendships throughout the adventures they go on is just truly amazing.
Literally cannot wait for the rest of the series.
Jenny - Thank you so much for the Arc for my honest review.
--- Quotes ---
"I ache for you." "And I live for you, my love. I despair, and I die, but I come back to life each day- for you."
"And who is it that you want to be?" "I want to be whole."
3.25 stars I got this as an arc and I just want to start with thank you for sending it! Going into this book is was excited, the first book ended on a mild cliffhanger but I was still intrigued by the world and magic system. We mostly just got the focus on the dragons and portals but I wish we could've seen more of their magic being used and woven throughout the story. The romance was another big focus but their solution felt very surface level, yes they talked but I feel like everyone just all of a sudden was fine with the situation that just hours before was really troubling them. While im happy they came to a solution I just feel like people still take time to get used to a new situation such as theres but it felt like there was no processing time they were just good. Also Leyanna cheating and everyone just being like 🤷♀️ thats Leyanna for ya is crazy. It was 48 hours, you couldn't wait to have a conversation with your boyfriend and break up before hooking up with Aydion? Then her being like "I didnt want to hurt him" girl what did you think was gonna happen? 🤣 She's on my sh*t list now lol When the dragons made Opal k*ll someone to activate the stone, hell no, that was not was we agreed upon and you're not gonna play in my face lol. Not telling them about that beforehand is devious and now im side eyeing the dragons cause Nell didnt deserve that lol.

This is the second book in the Soul Magic series and it was everything I needed after Shaedes of power. I was so happy to learn more about each character and have a story where their friendship really shines and can conquer anything. Opal deals with the struggle of being connected to two men that are so different but fulfill her in every way she needs. She can't live with just one, both have a part of her soul that she can't let go of and why should she?! She leaves it in the hands of the men to decide and oh boy, why choose is beginning to be one of my favorite tropes. The elegancy and fire of Edmyns words make you melt while the passion and sweetness of Farris makes you want to live in his arms forever. You also get introduced to the dragon realm of this series and things really get uncovered when they are faced with confronting them and discovering secrets that could make or break them. Leyandra gets a huge revelation that leaves her future with Lennyx unknown. The ending of this book was heartbreaking but the epilogue was super cute.
I can't wait to see how this story unravels for Opal, Farris and Edmyn but also the other characters that are growing and developing as the series goes on.
This is Book 2 in the Soul Magic Series and months have passed since everything that occurred in Book 1.
I love where the story is going, and may have even loved Book 2 more than Book 1! We get to see the relationships between Opal, Farris, and Edmyn slowly unfold while they navigate how they are going to fit in each other’s lives. While they figure that out, they are attacked by Dragons and get tasked with going on a quest to uncover the reason and save the faerie realm.
I love the introduction of the dragons and the wizards in this book, the immersive world-building, and the well-crafted magic system. The character building and what makes them all real and relatable is done perfectly. Even the side characters are amazing. The spice was done tastefully. This is such a great Book 2 in the series, and that ending! I had a feeling it was coming, but my heart sank all the same. I can’t wait for the next book to come out and I’m so excited to see where the story will go from here.
Thank you so much to the author for a gifted eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book in the author’s Soul Magic series. It picks up not long after where the first book left off; while you do get a better sense of the story by reading Book 1 first, there are enough references to prior events to allow the reader to start with Book 2.
Opal and her High Shaede friends are trying to navigate their realm in the aftermath of destroying Ciaran. A new potential threat arises from the dragon community, leading the friends to journey to the far reaches of the realm to seek a truce.
So many things happen in this book. Opal tries to come to terms with loving both Farris and Edmyn, as all three struggle with finding a balance that works for all of them. Leyanna discovers her heritage and comes into her power, finding love in an unexpected place.
The world building for this series is pretty incredible. There’s a lot, but the author masterfully balances everything so that the reader doesn’t get overwhelmed.
If you enjoy fantasy, romance, strangers to lovers, why choose, adventure, magic, and magical creatures then you definitely want to explore this series!
Book 2 in the Shaedes of Power Saga spices things up! Being torn between two guys while also holding one of the greatest seats of power can be one hell of a challenging situation 😅 And Dragons!! Have entered the chat. Overall this book holds pretty steady with the storytelling and character development but really soars with the world building. I’m in my world building era where I’d rather read about the world and its species than reads spicy fun time between three people. That’s my personal taste in all honesty. So that shouldn’t take away from this book at all. If you love spicy spicy why choose romance then this book series is for you. I for sure loved Jenny’s take on dragons and just dragons in general tbh lol That ending tho! Gut wrenching and just all around sad. I’d like to thank the amazing Jenny Grimes on having me on this journey with this series. I can’t even put into words how grateful I am. Check out book 1 on KU and see if this Romantasy is for you 💕
Oh my! I really didn’t know how she could out-write herself but boyyyyy did she! I didn’t think it was possible to fall in love with these characters more than I already was, but I was wrong. The character development played a very strong contribution to this book and I absolutely loved where their journeys lead them. The world building was amazing. The history and future of the realms were written so flawlessly that I had no problem understanding the string that tied the realms together. I devoured this book in under 12 hours and I can’t wait to see where their journey takes them next! 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Guys I absolutely loved this book . The character development and how they learn to evolve upon the situation with our main three characters one fmc and two mmc I was in love with it . We get to learn about dragons and wizards some more . Which’s if you know me I love dragons . Jenny really does outdo herself with not only the characters but the books in general. The pace of this book is something I like a lot as well it is medium to fast . Plus the spice is heating up a lot more as well but it doesn’t overpower the plot ( great plot /spice ratio) Jenny helps you understand the emotions they are feeling . This is probably my top read so far this year and can’t wait to see more !!
I loved everything about this book! The plot was fun and intriguing. The continued character growth had me hooked immediately. The development of Opal’s relationships felt so real. So raw.
I could feel the emotions of the characters and what an emotional rollercoaster it was.
The introduction of dragons was so fun. I loved their give no sh*t attitudes.
And that ending?! I’m not crying. You’re crying!
I loved the way Jenny weaved in dragons, romance and adventure into this story. I couldn’t put it down.
If you liked Shaedes of Power, then you need to read this one too. It’s, dare I say, better!
I loved returning to this world and all the delicious tension between Prism and her 2 competitive mates. The plot to spice ratio is great, and I enjoyed all the intrigue and mystery from new threats as they travel into new realms. It was fun to see Farris and Edmyn reluctantly work together for the benefit of Prism and their connected bond, even though they constantly want to kill each other. Loved the suspense and drama from dragons, and evil mages, and all the chaotic adventures they get into. Excited for more of the series.
*Shaedes of Fire* grabbed me by the throat and yeeted me straight into FEELS CITY. Jenny Grimes, how dare you?? She has no mercy and I love her for it. I’m unwell. I’m obsessed. If book 3 doesn’t come out soon, I might actually combust. Absolute perfection, 1000/10, send help.
Dragons! Need I say more? You’d like more? Happily!
Book 2 doesn’t disappoint, we continue with Opals journey as a High Shaede and navigating having two fated mates. Along the way Leyanna finds that she has a secret and we are introduced to the Dragon Court.
I’m anxious for book 3! Congratulations on another amazing book Jenny and thank you for letting me continue as an ARC reader!
I tried to pace myself with this one. I really did! Shades of Fire was even better than SOP! I laughed, I cried and may have even swooned a little bit! The way these books are written, you can actually see the characters, the colors - I cannot wait for the next one!
HOLY MOLY. I’m going to need a mild break after this one. I was feeling all the emotions! Betrayal, love, happiness, anger, jealousy, empowerment, shock, sadness, MORE SHOCK.
Now I feel empty and I need more. Absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to see what is to come!
This book was so easy to get through! Loved the why choose thropple it is what I was hoping would happen from the first book in the series!! This book is full of adventure, drama, dragons, magic and true found family! I’m so excited to see what else is in store for this series!!
I loved the first book, but this one was way better! It is filled with romance, magic, and dragons with a hint of trauma. I am so excited for this story to continue!
