Z is for Arson: The Gloria Richardson Case
The River County Sheriff’s Department K9 team of Zaborinski and Kato were taken off active K9 duty and reassigned to the inherently dull Property Crimes Unit after a devastating accident at a crime scene left Kato deaf. Disappointed that their new assignment was not likely to be as exciting as the last, Zaborinski found herself working with fire investigators on a series of fires and fraudulent insurance claims caused by a career criminal.
Zaborinski and Kato teamed with fire investigators Joe Gomez and Brian Oldman to put a stop to the fires and false claims of Gloria Richardson, but not before the suspect caused even more damage, personally affecting the team members. The usual firehouse banter and cop vs firefighter pranks were expected by Zaborinski, but she never thought they’d go so far as to involve her beloved K9 partner. Nothing is sacred in the blue/red war!
Kato’s accident left him with more than hearing loss, his personality started to change. Zaborinski worried about their future as partners, even though the loss of one very important sense seemed to have heightened yet another. Her best friend, Kato’s veterinarian, Dr. Ashley Ford, conspired to keep Kato working as Zaborinski’s partner.
Zaborinski’s on and off-duty friends created a welcome safety net for the crime-fighting duo, but she was shocked to find an adversary in the partnering fire agency, not just in the criminal she was bringing to justice. Her Lieutenant found himself defending her at every turn, but the Battalion Chief was undaunted in his quest to make her work life miserable.

Enjoyed this first book by Kathleen Highland. I was amused by the humor and personal lives of characters mixed in with solving a crime. I was invested in finding out if my hunch on how Gloria evaded detection for so long was on track.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end! The writing kept me engaged the whole time, not just in the dialogue (as often happens) but also in the details! The character development was also well done. Looking forward to the next one! (Foul language warning)
