A treasury of holiday stories, activities, and round-the-world traditions that emphasize the meaning of Christmas. A beautifully illustrated book containing family activities, stories for all ages, crafts, and decorations, recipes and menus, bible readings, and how to get it all done!
I love this book. Of all my Christmas books this is near the top of my favorite list. I'm not entirely sure why. There are so many ideas in it (101 probably), most of which I don't do, or I do them slightly differently than suggested. If I started to decorate after Thanksgiving I would be done sometime in January, type of thing. And I have no interest in making giant candles out of 5' PVC pipe, ribbon, and light bulbs, things like that. As to using a whole wall to hang your Christmas cards, none of my walls are empty enough at Christmas to make card walls out of them. Under the title "Christmas Everywhere", we are told to not put all the decorations in the living room - make the entire house festive, greens on the front door, a bow on the mailbox, children's stockings on their bedroom doors. This author hasn't seen my house.
Still, I read it every year. I like the ideas, the recipes, the stories, all 101 of them. And some of the things we tried were fun. The title "The Good Old Days" tells us to spend an hour with Christmas past by bringing out old scrapbooks, photo albums, slides, and movies. We have a lot of fun doing that, whether it is just my husband and myself, or with the grandkids, or when everybody is here.
I'm not sure why this is in my top ten Christmas list, or it would if I had such a thing, but it is.
My family doesn't have many Christmas traditions (even though the few we have I love.) I had been wanting to get my hands on some holiday traditions and when I saw this book I had to have it! Great ideas, crafts, cooking, etc. If you are looking for some new and fun ways to celebrate the holidays this is the perfect book!
