Men of Fire Mountain #1

Claimed by the Mountain Man

Rate this book
Two broken men. One chance at love. A connection neither can deny. And a claiming they both need.

Cooper Jackson served his country honorably; he came home damaged but determined. In the blink of an eye, he went from soldier to bartender, back home slinging drinks at his family’s bar. He expects quiet, solitude, the same bar regulars he’s known since childhood, and for his grandfather to be all up in his business. What he doesn’t expect is to be dumbstruck when the mountain-man version of Adonis, aka Gage Holloway, walks into his bar. And he certainly doesn’t expect their obvious instant connection. But when Gage denies that connection and all but ignores him, Cooper makes it his mission to tame this surly mountain man. And as a former Army Ranger, Cooper is no stranger to difficult missions… or difficult men.

Gage Holloway moved to Fire Mountain to escape his past—the job he never wanted, the family that never understood him, and the crushing guilt and grief of his former life. He ruins everything (and everyone) he touches, so now he just wants to be left alone where he can’t hurt anyone else. He nurses a drink at the local bar most nights sat alone in a secluded booth, so he can feel like he’s still part of the world without actually engaging it. He was fine on his own until a blond-haired, brown-eyed temptation in the form of the most beautiful man he’s ever seen upends his carefully-crafted, solitary existence. But there’s a reason Gage avoids human connection, and he’s not about to let Cooper Jackson make him forget… even if that’s the one thing his heart most wants.

Claimed by the Mountain Man is a grumpy/sunshine, small-town romance between an obstinate and reclusive mountain-of-a-man and an optimistic soldier-turned-bartender determined to drag his mountain man back into the world… and into his bed. There’s plenty of sexy swagger, flirty winks, protective behavior, thin mints obsession, sassy grandfathers, glamping romance, and a satisfying HEA!

About the Men of Fire Mountain
The mountain’s flames don’t just heat the air—they ignite passion and stir desire. The Men of Fire Mountain find their strength in the fires of love. When they fall, they fall hard. In this world, every connection is an inferno, every touch leaves a lasting mark. The men of Fire Mountain don’t just chase adventure—they burn for the ones they love. Get ready for sizzling stories of love that burns brighter than any flame.

There’s a reason Gage Halloway avoids human connection, and he’s not about to let Cooper Jackson make him forget… even if that’s the one thing his heart most wants.
Gage is hiding from his trauma on his mountain. Cooper just came back home to finish recovering and try to move on from his trauma. They are both so drawn to each other. The book is based on the question; can they get past everything and make a go of this?

It's a heartbreaking, but beautiful, emotional, slow burn, emotional read. Gage lost loved ones in his past due to poor decisions he made, and Cooper was damaged from his time in the military. Together, they help one another piece the broken bits of themselves back together. I don't care for a lot of angst in my stories; I really like the "happy" ones, but this slow angsty burn made me want more and more. I loved the big romantic gesture Gage did at the end of the book. Thank you, Denver Shaw, for this amazing read!

Claimed by the Mountain Man had a lot of potential to be good. The premise of two broken and grieving men coming together to heal and find love again sounds like it would be a fantastic read, but this fell flat for me.

Everything felt so rushed and thrown together, with no real build up or tension between Cooper or Gage. Then once we learn about their pasts, the story just falls apart and ends rather abruptly.

- mountain man + retired army ranger turned bartender
- grumpy x sunshine
- instant attraction
- traumaaaa
- small age gap (4 years)
- PTSD rep

3.5 stars. A quick read about two MCs with a lot of trauma in their pasts. This made the very slow burn a good fit. I just felt the story sort of ended after Gage told Cooper what had happened to him. After that, it was a bit of a rushed ending and felt a bit shallow. Otherwise, it's a very good complete story within the length.

I enjoyed reading this novella, although I feel like it might have worked better as a novel. Both Cooper and Gage had a past that left them hurting and I felt like it would have been great to see them work through that and get some more hurt/comfort vibes. There was an opportunity for a lot of depth of emotions regarding Cooper and Gage's pasts, that I thought would have been great to read about.
The premise of the whole story was great, and I really enjoyed both main characters. My heart went out to both of them. They were strong on their own, but together they were stronger and they could help each other in their times of need. Loved seeing Cooper be a caretaker.

If you're in the mood to read about two hurt, brokenish men, then this is the book for you.

I love Mountain Man stories! I'll buy the story that even just hints to it, this one was a perfect one for me, the mountain man claimed by an ex-army cocky young man who also suffers from PTSD. It's a slow start at first as cooper tries hard to draw Gage (mountain man) out of his silent self, a roaring thunder storm helps that. But Gage himself has his demons that haunt him. A sometimes sad tale as these two men struggle at times with life.

I was bored since their romance began too slowly, and there was too much narrative for my liking, but I eventually finished this book. I continue reading their story because I am curious about Gage's past.

Gage was gay, and he was discovered with another guy by his father. His father was livid and ordered Gage to start to act like a man, so he did what his father told him to do, dating girls, and finally became a defense attorney.

When the news broke about his mother dying, Gage was devastated, and her final wish was to have a grandchild. She didn't know that Gage was gay, and his father said that if his mother knew about it, it would send her to an early grave, so Gage kept his secret, and as an obedient son, he granted her wish.

At that time he had a female friend who he was closest to, but he never told her that he was gay. He married her, and he laid all his cards on the table: their marriage was a marriage of convenience and nothing more. She agrees. Meanwhile Gage wants a child from in vitro pregnancy, she won't have it any other way except for them to have sex so with a heavy heart he did having sex with her and finally Gage had a son. Not long after their son was born, his mother passed away and their marriage didn't work out. Gage kept their marriage solely because of his son, but after a few years, he couldn't stand it anymore. He told her that he was gay, and she was mad because she was clearly into him and even loved him, even though Gage had already stated that their marriage wasn't based on love. But she hoped that eventually Gage would love her, and she felt betrayed and walked out of their house, bringing their son in a raging storm, and both of them died in a car accident.

I can't solely blame her; it was a shitty thing for Gage to keep his sexuality a secret from his wife, and when he thought he had enough, he was finally able to tell the truth after stringing along his wife with an unhappy marriage. I hate that type of character, like Gage Holloway.

Set in Ashwood. Then it’s set in Missoula, Montana. Then it’s set in Ashwood. 😵‍💫

Cooper Jackson, 28, is an United States Army Ranger combat veteran. He’s now the bartender at his grandfather’s watering hole.

Gage Holloway, 32, is a former trial lawyer. For dramatic reasons, he is now an independent artist who specializes in woodworking.

They are both one another’s dream guy. 🤨

They’re both scared of thunderstorms.

These guys are so sensitive with each other. They ask for consent when they ask difficult questions. 🤣

The dialogue rings especially false, with lines like

“I come from a very wealthy family in Chicago.”

Word repetition. British-isms. Misses and misuses end quotes in paragraphs. Tense shift mistakes: past, present, and back again. If only there were a magical thing called Beta Readers. Or Editors. Or…both. 💀

Bizarre drama and angst.

Eight instances of the men just randomly crying.

Her attempts at lust and sexual tension are fumbling.

Dating for three months…with clothes on. 🙄

Suddenly, there’s a chapter with Cody’s POV. I was hoping they’d magically adopted a wayward child or something! But nah. She just forgot her own character’s name. (Not for the last time…)

Characters are empty, save for their Trauma Dumps.

“My joy is in tact. I’m looking right at it.” 🤦‍♂️

Her idea of “dirty talk” is something.

The one and only action scene is so Female Gaze it’s unreadable.

A very obvious aping of gay men. Imagining virile, relatively young gay men thinking like this is…yeah…nope. 👎🏻

A sweet and completely unearned ending.

Dear Readers, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading Gage and Cody’s story.

Told ya we’d get Cody again.

Say something nice…say something nice…ummm…okay.
The grandfather is funny.

'I have a feeling this man is going to be a problem for me. An infuriating, hot-as-heII problem.'

I loved this book. It was such a sweet hurt/comfort romance (and I love mm mountain man romance!). I loved both Gage and Cooper. Both have very painful pasts- different circumstances, but both suffered tragic losses. Gage's particularly wrecked me.

I loved their first sight of each other- made hilarious to me by Cooper's grandfather.

“Oh, hey, Gage. Come on in, your booth’s open. Sorry about my grandson. He’s not usually so… this.” He waved his hand toward me dismissively. Then, turning back to me, he said, “Close your mouth, boy. You’re gonna catch flies with your mouth hanging wide open like that.”
I internally scoffed. Please, my mouth was not open. But, as I went to tell him just that, I realized he had been right. F- me. My mouth had been hanging wide open. And is that a drop of drool in the corner of my mouth? God-mn it!'

I loved Cooper's personality. His nervous ramble was cute and he was determined to get Gage's attention and win him over. He made me laugh, too. Especially with his banter with his awesome grandfather.

I loved that Gage was equally struck dumb at his first sight of Cooper. The attraction between them instant. I also like that both wondered if they'd been taken over by their teenage selves by the way they reacted to each other. It was cute.

I enjoyed the dance between them. Cooper's sunshine personality and Gage's broken heart. They needed each other and made such a great match. I loved their story. 5 stars.

This heartfelt and sweet small-town love story truly tugs at the emotions. From the beginning, Gage and Coby have a strong connection—an undeniable attraction that’s impossible to ignore. But this story shines because it dives so deeply into their emotional pasts.

Gage and Coby carry heavy burdens from earlier in life—wounds that make it difficult for them to move forward. As their stories unfold, I could feel the weight of their guilt, despair, and anguish. What struck me most was how those feelings weren’t born of their own mistakes but of circumstances beyond their control.

The pacing of their relationship was perfect. I appreciated how they took things slow, allowing trust to grow between them. It made their bond feel genuine and earned. Just when you think they might crumble under the weight of their pasts, life throws them both a curveball. But instead of falling apart, they stand together—stronger as a team. That moment, when both of their pasts come knocking, is absolutely heart-stopping and powerful.

This is a story about healing, connection, and love that doesn’t rush but builds something solid and lasting. With a satisfying happily-ever-after, Claimed by the Mountain Man is a beautiful, emotional romance that stays with you long after the last page.

"Two broken men. One chance at love. A connection neither can deny. And a claiming they both need."

This is the first book in the " men of fire mountain series" and what a start it was. I couldn't put it , I kept turning page after page. Yes it's a slow burn but I felt it was perfect for them. Their chemistry is undeniable. They are complete opposites but they complement each other perfectly. It's a quick read but packs a punch.

They both have trauma from their past, your heart breaks for them. But witnessing them together is beautiful. All in all was such a great read I loved it all.

Highly recommend!!

Super sweet heart breaking read
Wow where to start with this book? We have got Gage who moved to fire mountain to kind of escape his past his trauma. You see he lost his family and blamed himself, he just needed to go somewhere to concentrate on what he enjoyed and that was carpentry.
Cooper Had served his country going on tour and surviving a IUD attack that killed the rest of his team. It left him with a slight limp and a fear of thunder. He is a survivor. He had moved back to work at his families bar. He had a really good relationship with his grandpa and the banter between them was hilarious. So when he sees a new face come into the bar he wonders who he is, but he can’t help but feel the attraction to him. But it seems the new guy gauge isn’t much of a talker. Looks like he was a hard nut to break good thing Cooper didn’t give up easily.
This is a super sweet read about two guys that are fighting against a trauma that brings them heartache but together Offering each other support love and understanding makes all the difference. I’ve only read a few books by Denver Shaw but I’ve got to admit I am becoming addicted to the stories..

This one is hard to rate. I enjoyed reading the story, but the characters just got a little too sappy toward the end of the book. I enjoyed reading about their history and what happened to each of them, Gage with his past and Cooper with his Military background, but I guess I was just expecting a different dynamic than what happened.

I like that there is an actual story and Gage and Cooper get to know each other before they get hot and heavy. The story is short and easy to read. There are only ten chapters with an epilogue.

The only confusing part was at the beginning of chapter ten where it says, “three months later” and then again in the epilogue it says, “three months later”. It took me a minute to figure out it was the same three months and not another three months later. I also think the epilogue could have just been titled chapter eleven because it’s just a continuation of chapter ten.

Overall, it is a good story.

I voluntarily read a Hidden Gems ARC of this book.

What an incredibly beautiful book!!! Both of the MC’s have traumatic pasts (war related PTSD and panic attacks for Cooper and traumatic death of loved ones (including a child) with I’m not even sure what to call the attempted ?brainwashing/guilting of Gage by his father to be straight instead of gay…) so mind your triggers… however if you can deal with those things this book is a wonderful exploration of love in its truest form, and acceptance of others and self. Denver does a really great job describing what it might be like for someone having a flashback/panic attack and some of the techniques that might be used to help a person through that in a thoughtful and sensitive way. You can really feel Gage and Coopers connection forming based on shared traumatic pasts (different traumas but both certainly traumatized).

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Of course the flirtation and sexy scenes were great… But it’s the love and connection that’s the real story. Beautifully written, easy to read. No angst. Delightful read.

Being a novella, this was a quick read. The book tells the story of two men, Cooper and Gage, both of them have secrets why the have returned to Fire Mountain. Cooper was previously an Army Ranger until he was medically discharged and now helps his granddad in the local pub.
Although Gage has lived in Fire Mountain for a few years, he keeps his private life private, all most can say about him is that he is an exceptional carpenter.
Whilst there was instant attraction this is a slow burn romance, as Cooper wants to chase and Gage holds himself back. However after a storm things start to change.
One thing with this story was I wanted know their backstories, Why was Gage a recluse and how did Cooper get injured and when they were revealed, both their stories were sad.
There were a few timelines jumps which made that part feel a bit rushed, but the epilogue made up for that and what good epilogue.
I do enjoying reading books from this author and I am looking forward to reading more

This book is a quick read, grumpy/sunshine, and hurt/comfort ish story. It wasn’t very long, so it isn’t drawn out unnecessarily. There’s a grumpy sunshine dynamic, with Gage being the grump. Although he’s not really, just hurting. And the hurt comfort bit is on both the main character ends. They both have some stuff they struggle with, and are able to open up with the other. There was a bit of inconsistency with Cooper’s name at the end, but I’m not sure if that was just the copy I received, as I was lucky to get an arc. This book isn’t super spice heavy throughout. The action happens at the end, so to speak lol. There was a lot of fun banter and sass and some heavy stuff mentioned, like death, military experiences and homophobia. It isn’t a heavy book though, there’s a lot of lightness to it. Overall a good story to read in between longer books, or if you don’t want to commit to a long story!

story of Gage and Cooper

This is a grumpy x sunshine small town novella romance, featuring Cooper Jackson and Gage Holloway, and is book one in the Men Of Fire Mountain multi author series.

When ex-Army Ranger Cooper Jackson returns home to work at his family’s bar, he doesn’t expect to be instantly drawn to the brooding, reclusive Gage Holloway who is hiding from a painful past.

There was an undeniable connection between Cooper and Gage. This is a slow-burn, low angst romance that challenges both of them to confront their fears and try and open their hearts to love. It has a cute and spicy HEA.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 1 in series

Novella
MM romance
Small town
Slow burn
Low angst
Grumpy x Sunshine
Carpenter x bartender
Ex lawyer x Ex military
Hurt / Comfort
Living with grief

If you're looking for a cozy, heartwarming romance with just a little spice, Claimed by the Mountain Man is your perfect read! Denver Shaw does an amazing job with the characters, making them both lovable and relatable. The pacing was spot on, I didn't feel like their story was rushed or overly drawn out.

What I particularly loved was how the spicy moments came at the end, keeping the story grounded in that sweet, slow-burn romance that had me rooting for these two from start to finish.

And then there’s the dinosaur bed. Honestly, that scene might just be the highlight of the book! It was so unexpectedly adorable and quirky that I couldn’t stop smiling.

In conclusion, if you're in the mood for a delightful, romantic MM story that’ll make you smile and swoon, Claimed by the Mountain Man is a must-read.

Walking the tightrope! Gage, is self isolating for several reasons greatest is the tragic loss of his family. He imerses himself in his woodworking and allows himself a drink at the local bar to keep touch with his humanity. Cooper, returns home to tend bar at his GrandFather's bar. His relationship with his GrandDad, whom he considers the best man he ever knew is truly heartwarming. When they meet, they are both struck by lightening. The attraction was spontaneous and a bit funny. Gage is a bit of a relationship/commitment phobe and Coop is open to settling. This is an intense story where two men drag heavy burdens of hurt, they must shift through to find the deserving goodness of life. Intense, but worth it. Good characters. Well done! Cooper Jackson, a former Army Ranger turned bartender, is determined to build a quiet life after returning home—until Gage Holloway walks into his bar. The rugged loner, haunted by his past and wary of connection, tries to keep his distance, but Cooper refuses to back down. Their undeniable attraction challenges Gage’s self-imposed isolation, and despite his resistance, Cooper is set on breaking through his walls. As their bond deepens, both men must confront their wounds and decide if they’re ready to take a chance on love.

I loved this story with the two men who were damaged in their own way but managed to find comfort and a future with each other. Cooper was such a positive man who was such a force for positivity Gage really didn't stand a chance.Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

Claimed by the Mountain Man is a sweet grumpy/sunshine, hurt/comfort quick read. Cooper and Gage have a strong connection from their very first meeting. The outgoing and charismatic Cooper immediately leans into it, while loner Gage's first instinct is to fight it. Over multiple encounters, the two men open up about their traumas and fall in love in the process. Expect lots of witty banter and tender moments, as well as heart-wrenching backstories. I experienced a brief moment of confusion when Cooper became Cody in the POV header for Chapter 10, so I'm hoping that was corrected in the final copy. And I would've liked the book to be just a bit longer, as the transition from an emotional ninth chapter to the two-part epilogue felt a little abrupt. 4/5 stars

A book I truly wished I'd DNF'd.

Stilted, clunky writing.

The author apparently could not decide whether the name of one of the MC's was "Cooper" or "Cody" and both names appear through the book (including a chapter heading, which makes you wonder who the eff Cody is when the story's been all about Cooper and Gage up to that point).

I fully appreciate that gender and masculinity fall on a vast continuum and can be represented in truly infinitely different ways, but it was jarring to read the dialogue for both Cooper (I mean Cody, I mean Cooper) and Gage, as many of the lines sounded as if they were written as dialogue for Blanche Devereaux from "The Golden Girls." Especially during the one sex scene. (If you've ever yearned for a romance where one man calls another a "saucy minx," then THIS book is for YOU.)

The one decently scripted scene was when The MCs both had a Big Soul Searing Secret and the dialogue was so similar for the Big Dramatic Revelations for both that it was hard to keep track.

Sorry. This was just....not good.

Claimed By The Mountain Man is part of the Men of Fire Mountain Series.

Gage is going through a lot of guilt on a daily basis and he finally finds the strength to confess everything he is feeling to someone. Cooper helps to heal his soul and forgive himself for his perceived guilt. Both characters have their own tragic pasts but they both approach the healing process in a different way. It was nice seeing different perspectives for healing.

It started out really good, but after the big confession it seemed to dwindle out and feel like a bit of a rushed ending. I would've liked to see more of the healing and acceptance, but we get a time jump and I feel that part would've been good for the story.

The only way to get through the sadder parts is to remember that this is a Denver Shaw story. Romance with a HEA. Tissues needed.

Hurt/comfort and gloomy/sunshine describe Cooper and Gage's story. Both men had devastating losses. Gage lost his wife and son in a horrible car accident. Cooper was the only survivor when his team's vehicle hit an IED.

They're both broken, and their healing is part of this slow burn story. The author does speed towards the end after the three quarters point, which is something of a shame. The reader misses so much Gage loving on Cooper time.

A quick read. I'd have liked it to have been just a tad longer.

An infuriating, hot-as-hell problem

Your heart breaks for these two warriors who are dinted and cracked, their souls have been shattered by loss and pain. But their broken souls fit perfectly together, easing their guilt and healing their souls. But life has already almost crushed them once, and Gage especially feels the need to fight their chemistry, his fear almost crippling. This is a wild journey that sucks you into an emotional hurricane, but it is also sweet, steamy and packed with hope.
I really enjoyed this book, there is a slight hiccup in Chapter 9 when Cooper briefly becomes Cade, but no other typos that I found. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

Cooper and Gage are two men with tragic pasts, that have instant sparks flying when they first lock eyes. Cooper is upbeat, flirty and joyous despite having lived thru a military tragedy, and Gage is his perfect grumpy counterpart. Gage is still struggling with the loss of his family, and meeting Cooper really throws a wrench in his grief spiral. Very cute book, with just enough spice, I look forward to reading more of this series.

I received this book as an ARC, and this review contains my honest opinions. I have read many Denver Shaw books in the past and couldn't pass up reading another one.

Claimed by the Mountain Man is a quick novella length read that definitely draws the reader in. Gage and Cody have both experienced trauma in their past and both carry it with them daily. Be sure to read the trigger warnings so you are prepared. Their relationship is a slow burn romance and it progresses nicely. Being complete opposites really is the reason they are so good for each other. Their is spice once they admit their feelings but I wish the book would have been a little longer. It definitely felt rushed and I wanted more and the author is more than capable of presenting a good ending. I will definitely read more by this author.

loved it.

This was about Cooper and Gage. Cooper grew up in this town but when he was 19 he went into the military. He came home on medical discharge when he was injured. He lost his whole crew that day. He was working at the bar his grandfather owned when Gage walked in. He couldn’t take his eyes off of him and his grandfather saw it and was picking on him in a loving way. Gage was pretty much the same way until he snapped out of it and sat in his booth. Cooper went over with his drink and they talked for a few minutes. Gage stayed for a while and left. He came back another night and they spent a lot of time together after the bar closed down. Cooper had a panic attack and Gage helped him through it. Must read.

This is a beautiful love story that will make you laugh and cry. The characters are realistic and the world building is wonderful.

Gage has always lived his life for everyone except himself. He no longer believes he deserves to be loved.

Cooper is a lil ray of sunshine, but that sunshine hides what's inside. He has set his eyes on Gage and is in it for the long haul.

There are trigger warnings for this book, please make sure to read them before beginning.

Cooper and Gage are both damaged in their own way. When they meet and unexpectedly touch it is clear more could be there , but they are not ready.
After a while they trust the other to be a safe haven. After that romance and heat is on. The development of the story is quick when they decide they dare to jump in since this is a novella length story.
This book is a standalone in a multi author series which has various pairings. This one is an MM small town romance.

Triggers might apply. Please check.

This story is a book with two characters, who are both heavily burdened from their past.

The attraction and connection are instant, but both are hesitant to act on it.

This book is an emotional and heartfelt story full of trauma, healing, guilt, connection, trust and love.

It is perfectly paced, slower, but that is what this story needed. They needed time to build trust and bond deeply.

It’s sweet, emotional and beautiful.
