In search of answers, Jenn consults several experts on the matter, fellow witches she's come to trust. Through the stories they share, Jenn embarks on a journey of discovery. When a menacing visitor arrives, intent on turning her dreams into nightmares, Jenn finds herself at a should she resist change, play it safe, and maintain the status quo? Or should she embrace a destiny of magick that will forever alter her life?

The Witchfinder’s Familiar by Rande Goodwin and Joseph J. Christiano is a beautifully woven continuation of The Witches of Windsor saga a spellbinding blend of dark fantasy, coming-of-age reflection, and magical realism. Set in the aftermath of supernatural upheaval, this illustrated anthology deepens the emotional and mythological layers of Jenn Quigley’s world while expanding the scope of the series into a realm of folklore, wisdom, and rediscovery.

What sets this book apart is its narrative structure: a collection of interconnected stories told through the lens of mentorship and memory. Jenn, still reeling from the events of The Witchfinder’s Sacrifice, seeks answers to the meaning of her inherited magick. Through tales shared by fellow witches and allies, readers are treated to a sweeping exploration of witchcraft’s moral codes, ancestral bonds, and the balance between fear and destiny.

Each story feels like a living relic a whispered spell, a cautionary fable, a piece of hard won truth passed down through generations. The inclusion of dragons, familiars, and ancient magicks adds grandeur, but the heart of this anthology is human: the tension between self-discovery and self-preservation. Jenn’s dilemma whether to resist her power or embrace her destiny becomes a universal metaphor for anyone learning to step fully into who they are.

The prose is lush yet accessible, and the illustrations heighten the sense of wonder and foreboding. Goodwin and Christiano balance intensity and warmth, crafting moments that shimmer with enchantment while confronting loss, legacy, and courage.

For readers who love the intertwining of myth and modern adolescence reminiscent of Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle or Deborah Harkness’s All Souls Trilogy The Witchfinder’s Familiar offers a captivating return to Windsor’s haunted, heartfelt world. It’s both a bridge between stories and a magical statement of its own: that knowledge, once sought, changes everything.

A richly layered, enchanting, and deeply satisfying addition to the Witches of Windsor universe.

Special thanks to the author for sending me an advanced copy of this one! My opinions are honest and my own.

This was a great continuation of the series. The interconnectedness of the short stories was a pleasant surprise. Further, this book feels consequential—these are not simply fun stories, rather they help the series’ overall plot move forward.

Hopefully in future installments we’ll get to see more of certain characters introduced in this one. I won’t say more than that for fear of spoilers, but I will say I am glad to have read this!
