Living alone does not mean we are defeated, because we are never alone. This book is about many other factors than just being alone. Living alone is not the same as being alone. Much of this book is written to help those of us who are alone - not to be lonely.
Charles Livingstone Allen (1913 – 2005) was an American ordained United Methodist minister.
He was the former pastor of First United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. The author of over 30 books, he was a featured columnist with the Atlanta Constitution from 1948 to 1960, and with the Houston Chronicle from 1960 to 1983.
This is the first book of Charles L. Allen's I've read. There were many phrases in it that spoke directly to situations I am currently facing and I have jotted them down to meditate on. I don't know if I would read it again but I am interested in reading more of Mr. Allen's work.
The book has a few lovely moments but overall I found it deeply disappointing. Charles Allen seems to be more a gatherer of others' quotes than an author himself. At times it felt he got lost in the subject matter and bending it to include others' poems and quotes so that while the book started off feeling it could be an important encouragement to me, I ended feeling he'd largely wasted my time.
I could not put the book down. In a series of events that only God could have planned, this book came into my possession when I really needed it. I re-read every so often.
