Nothing stands in the way of revenge, romance, and rediscovery for the women in these stories, who make the most of second chances. Whether coming to terms with lost love, or facing real and imagined demons on an amusement park ride, these women do what it takes to survive ... and then some. Stick with them through sunny days, shifting sands, stormy skies, and starry nights as they learn about life and love at the beach. Award-winning writer Nancy Powichroski Sherman strikes just the right chord in this entertaining selection of stories, all set in towns along the shores of Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey. Smile with recognition as characters in the stories run into the surf in Rehoboth Beach, ride the ferry from Lewes to Cape May, barhop in Dewey, sip lattes in Bethany Beach, stroll on the boardwalk in Ocean City, and visit the Wildwood amusement pier.
What fun! Short stories set at the beaches I am familiar with. This would be a great one to tote along in your beach bag. My two favorites stories in this collection are Dancing at The Legion and A Cougar at the Starboard, which are about aging gracefully. Nicely written and moving characters.
Rounding up to 3 stars, because I want to support a new-ish author. I bought this on the boardwalk at Rehoboth. It’s a very easy read; it’s not the greatest writing. But I will say that it is delightfully entrenched in “place,” and that’s as fun. I also liked that all the stories are female-centered.
After reading Sandy Shorts, I'm not surprised this compilation has won first prize in both the Delaware Press Association and the National Federation of Press Women. It may have been meant for a beach read, but I totally enjoyed it as an Autumn read. I recommend.
Some of the short stories are cute, though they are sometimes unnecessarily wordy and predictable. If you enjoy reading about local areas on the Delmarva coast, as I do, you will probably enjoy it as well.
I am on a long road trip and picked this up from the gift shop on the Cape May - Lewes ferry. It is a perfectly delightful beach read. And a great souvenir to remember my trip.
