Despite the challenges and fast-paced life of the city, Angie always felt a more profound calling. Dancing in Freedom: From Bondage to Jubilee by Angie Hanlon-Toth is a book that makes you think and reflect. It talks about how life can be made easy when one simply submits to God's will. It gives tips on how running after desires can lead to unhappiness and can rob one of mental peace in life. It beautifully expresses how God can be your only savior in the turbulent times and completely relying on him is the true key. What makes this book stand out is that it is not a preachy textbook but in fact is a tale of personal experiences which can be relatable to every reader. The book is complemented with verses and they are explained in a simple manner through which one can live with the true essence of life. The book serves as a great reminder for any who experiences difficult challenges and gives solutions on how to manage them.
Inspirational Dancing in Freedom: From Bondage to Jubilee by Angie Hanlon-Toth is an inspirational book that reminds readers of God’s grace. The author writes that the book is “not just about finding your purpose or overcoming struggles; it’s about experiencing a transformation leading to true freedom and a deep, fulfilling connection with the Lord.” Ultimately, the book is for people who want a deeper connection with their faith in God.
The book is autobiographical. The author shares her personal experiences throughout. Her story includes – a very difficult childhood, unhealthy relationships, having an abortion, the death of her husband, being a single mother, and surviving two near-fatal car crashes. The author's honesty about her feelings and concerns is refreshing. She is at her best when she is honest and vulnerable.
The book is easy to read. Angie Hanlon-Toth writes in a conversational style. It is like she is sitting with you, telling her story. The writing style makes the message more effective.
You will appreciate the book’s spiritual content. It is filled with practical advice such as: start every morning with prayer, practice gratitude, and practice mindfulness. The adversity she has experienced has help to deepen her connection with Jesus Christ. Her life-lessons will also help you to trust God more. The author wisely reminds her readers, “Spiritual growth is a continuous process that takes place over a lifetime, not an instantaneous achievement.” Chapter 10 which is titled “The New Self Desires God’s Will” is a standout. This chapter teaches that we should not live for the temporary things of this world, but instead live for Jesus.
Overall, I recommend this book. It is full and rich with insight and confidence building in our Lord.
By the writing style, I can tell the author is a storyteller at heart. She uses her personal journey of healing and growth to present ideas for the reader on their own journey through healing. The trajectory of the book steers you from healing to figuring out how you should volunteer your time.
There are times when the author appears to mix mainstream concepts such as manifestation and self-discovery with a few Bible verses. On page 53 she writes, “I manifested my potential to contribute positivity to my professional environment.” In practical terms, what does this mean? Is it scriptural? And on page 54 she discusses the Self-Discovery Cycle with very few verses, yet I didn’t see anything about discipleship. Growing as a Christian and in our relationship with God is discipleship.
Later on page 54, Hanlon-Toth treads on some dangerous ground with, “God’s fingerprints in every situation.” This sounds like “everything happens for a reason” which is a toxic line of thinking.
When she talked about Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well on page 52, she called it an unexpected detour. Maybe to the disciples it was unexpected as the Jews purposely avoided travelling through Samaria, but Jesus consciously chose that route.
While I think this book may have been lacking some scriptural support in areas, it is not devoid of verses and does contain helpful scripture. In addition, there were some quotes that resonate with me such as, “In this way we can begin to free ourselves from the strict rules we’ve set for ourselves, thinking they’re what God expects, even though He never asked for them” (p12). Yes, 100% agree. And again on page 52, “Herein lies the radical act of forgiving oneself for those imperfections, just as we are forgiven through grace.” I totally agree. Spot on.
Was this the book I expected it to be, no. Is there some useful information here, yes. A few of the chapters, such as chapter four, included not only helpful tips but also actionable items. If you are trying to process past trauma or current struggles and trying to figure out how best to serve in your local church and/or community, this book might be helpful in your journey. If you are thinking that due to your past you are unworthy of God’s love and he cannot use you, you might want to read this book.
I received an advanced copy of this book on Reedsy Discovery for my honest and unbiased opinion.
I greatly enjoyed reading Angie's book and would highly recommend it for both personal reading and in a Bible study setting.
My favorite part is the Bible verses she includes; it helped me to re-think some of my assumptions in my spiritual journey. For example, I learned I should let go of a false sense of "perfection" (this is ego, and is not pleasing to God) and instead embrace personal authenticity rooted in humility. Also, when I am at rest in His presence, that is likely when I'll be able to hear Him the most; I need to actively tune out the distractions in my life.
She shares meaningful parts of her personal testimony and combines it with practical application. I learned about specific examples for how to overcome internal and external obstacles, a divine connection framework with applicable Scripture, and a path to discovering spiritual fulfillment. This book is a treasure and is easy to read for all ages and stages.
This is a heartfelt and uplifting book that speaks to anyone searching for spiritual direction and inner freedom. The author writes with sincerity and warmth, offering guidance that feels personal, compassionate, and grounded in faith. It’s easy to follow and comforting, especially for readers going through difficult or uncertain seasons.
The book gently encourages reflection, healing, and renewed purpose without feeling overwhelming. Its focus on faith, resilience, and spiritual growth makes it a reassuring companion for those wanting to reconnect with God and rediscover meaning and joy in their lives.
I enjoyed the story telling and the purposeful journey to overcome past decisions. The suggestions, interspersed with scripture, highlights the authors love for Christ. The detailed description of scenes reads like a novel in some sections, but it does allow you to be there with the author.
For those looking for direction, this book is strong on a set path to find healing by giving of yourself and finding community.
I participated in a book club with the author and several others. This book is very enlightening and insightful. Her experiences are thought provoking and makes you want to dig deeper in your relationship with God. By sharing her triumphs as well as set backs, she demonstrates Gods grace and mercy and what can become if you keep your eyes on the Lord. I thoroughly enjoyed the book!
Robert Bryan Widbin...A dramatic rendering of the power of the Spirit of God to transform the life of one of his children. Thank you, Angie Hanlon-Toth, for reminding us that God never lets go of those he loves. Need to be inspired by how God redeems heartbreaks?
Have you ever looked fine on the outside… but felt bound entirely on the inside? I have. And that’s why I wrote Dancing in Freedom: From Bondage to Jubilee. God kept tugging on my heart to share the raw, honest parts of my story—because I know what it’s like to feel invisible in pain, to question your worth, to cry out to God and wonder if He’s still listening. I wrote this book so others wouldn’t stay stuck there—so they’d know that if God could meet me in that place and set me free… He can meet them, too. This isn’t just my story—it’s an invitation to hope, healing, and purpose. I’d love for you to read it—and share it with someone who needs to know: they’re not alone.
