The Rwanda Mission: Craig Hobart Adventures - One Man Against Genocide

Rate this book
An action tale set during the height of the Rwandan genocide

It is 1994. Craig Hobart, a few years after leaving the Navy SEALs and now a reserve officer in Naval Intelligence, parachutes alone into the middle of Rwanda.

He’s experienced and well – armed, but totally alone.

The genocide started only a few weeks earlier. Many thousands of Tutsis have already been slaughtered.

Without his commanding officer’s permission, or sanction, Craig single -handedly forms a small army of Tutsi civilians, desperately trying to fight his way either to Congo, or Uganda, while fighting the Hutu militias and army at every step.

With unexpected, gutsy, imaginative and very effective assistance of Brown, the Kigali CIA station chief, the number of his civilian charges keeps growing in numbers and strength.

Gaining strength, Craig boldly ambushes Rwandan military and militia convoys, collecting arms, ammunition and vehicles.

A pretty Tutsi widow, whose life was saved during the first attack on a Hutu militia unit, becomes Craig’s next romantic interest.

Transporting hundreds of Tutsis in military trucks and other vehicles out of Rwanda does not end the mission. A banker has absconded with tons of gold from the Rwandan National Bank and a museum director is trying to preserve ancient Tutsi artifacts.

Although the CIA agrees to reinforce Craig’s force with a contingent of paramilitaries, the situation remains precarious and tense to the very end.

Even though Craig’s solo attempt to save as many lives as he could constitutes a fictional account, the story is closely based on real events.

There is a lot of fighting, death and shooting, but Craig and the CIA make a serious effort to confine the killing to the actual perpetrators – the Rwandan militias and the military.

Writing has always been an important part of Greg's life. Fairly recently he has decided to create Craig Hobart's character and put him into some rather precarious and interesting predicaments.

Although Craig Hobart's Adventures are a work of fiction, there are always certain elements linking him to the author's real life.

Greg hopes that you enjoy his books and will not hesitate to voice your comments about them.

Timeline 4/25-29/1994, 5/1-8/1994.
Gitarama, Rwanda, Craig Hobart (OCS, former Navy SEAL, intelligence operative, Office of Naval Intelligence, MS, MIT) had parachuted & landed. He was well equipped with guns/ammo & a backpack full of survival necessities (2 canteens, MRE’s, clothing, 1st aid kit). Craig was left with a very substantial trust fund from his paternal grandfather. Cathy free-lance journalist) is Craig sexy lover.
Rwandan President Habyarimana & the President of Burundian plane was shot down. The Hutu terrorists thought the Arusha Peace Accords was going to be implemented. It was signed on 8/4/1993, but didn’t really matter.

It was a combination of the Hutu militia (interahamwe) & the Rwandan Armed Forces (FAR) who were exterminating the Rwandan Tutsis by the 1,000’s.
Other countries failed to help out defuse the atrocity.
The Tutsi Rwandese Patriotic Front (RPF) were on their own.
In previous yrs. it was the Rwandan Tutsis killing the Hutu’s.
Craig meets Alex (Tutsi) & Olive. (14, daughter) in Gitarama. His other 3 family members had been killed by the Hutu’s.
Along the way back to the Rwandan (village) the 3 met Kwizera (bourgmestre) & later meet Alice (Tutsi widow) & Michael. Alice seems to have the hot’s for Craig & vice-versa.
Paul (Tutsi enclave) informed Craig where some of the Hutu enemy combatants were held up.
Later Patrick joins the group. Joe Brown (CIA station chief) & Peter (driver) join up also.
On his journey across all kinds of terrain Craig meets Dr. Gerard Nsereko (director of the museum, Butare) & Alice Nsereko.
Will some country finally send some paramilitary help?
Will Craig & his band of assailants be able to successfully defuse the genocide?
How long will it take the villages & towns in Rwanda to be restored to some normality?

I’m a former US Army Vietnam veteran. I love stuff about war still. Movies, books whatever I can get my hands on. I’ll be quite honest I am a visual detail person. & like lots of guts & gore. Maps of all your cool villages & towns would have been neat. &/or a complete breakdown of all your characters then add on as you went along. I must say I was impressed with your knowledge of weapons & equipment.

The horrors of genocide.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written military book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make great military movie, or mini TV series. I did enjoy reading it but it was just OK for me so I will rate it at 4/5 stars.
