Kang Kyoung-ae's first work, "Broken Strings" reveals the concerns and inclinations that would come to characterize her writing, The main character Hyeong-cheol stands at a crossroads: take the well-trodden path down which his future is guaranteed, or stand with the masses and fight society. After agonizing over this choice, he throws everything away and leaves for Gando/Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture in northern China. With its cast of characters who sacrifice their youth in Manchuria to devote themselves to the people's struggle, this story demonstrates Kang's sense of duty as a writer who wanted to change the world.

Naturally, a very quick read! I loved the descriptive elements of the location and found Hyeong-cheol's desire to be something significant in society honourable, particularly as he strived to be the change he wished to see. The epilogue in the version I read, however, was very brief and lacked context.

Pretty disappointing compared to Kang's later works. Still a bit immature and very rushed in places.
