Depression, War, Disability Be Damned: Praise God

Rate this book
Too often the tales of war focus on mere survival, While it is an enormous accomplishment in such violent times, readers of war memoirs are often left wondering about the details after the battle, after the physical wounds are healed. How often did the men and women who endured such trauma move forward to lead fulfilling lives? Thomas Jay Lee's memoir, "Depression, War, Disability Be Damned: Praise God," leaves no such questions unanswered.

Lee tells of the rigors of growing up during the Great Depression in southern Indiana but credits the love of family, community and friends for instilling in him respect for integrity, hard work and faith in God. Such tenets enabled him to cope with battle wounds of such severity as to require thirty-nine months surgeries and therapy in the attempt to save his leg, only to lose it a year later after being discharged.

In the challenge to overcome the effects of non-productivity during those hospital years and establish himself as something more than a recovering soldier Lee relates his return to and graduation from Wabash College and the frustrations of finding his niche in the civilian world.

Marriage and entry into the world of education provided Thomas Lee the incentive to gain an advanced degree from the University of Denver and serve as a teacher, curriculum developer and administrator at three major institutions. In the midst of detailing his personal and professional success, he never dilutes the hardship he faced along the way and writes frankly about physical and emotional trials, rendering this memoir of determination and achievement a humbling and uplifting read.
