Surveys the evolution of the dinosaur population in North America, from the beginning of the age of reptiles to the extinction of the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago
This is a wonderful - informative AND beautiful - book! As the back cover accolades from experts in the field make clear, it's a richly illustrated (both with an abundance of paintings and photos and illustrative maps) and engagingly well written, thoughtful account of the relatively recent level of knowledge in North American paleontology.
Russell begins by making the great point that dinosaurs are, in general, a subject adults tend to ignore while one children take to with enthusiasm; "Dinosaurs are a touchstone that separates the mentality of children from that of adults." And it's the type of perceptive observation (making us as mature - ignoring adult types - wonder why that is so) that makes this such a good book. And so the story begins - a deep dive into the past! It's the kind of coffee table book with substance that is perfect for enticing a young reader to look through or an adult to explore at random and discover something fascinating about our past (in forgotten personal childhood and distant geologic time)!
