“You know, I’m not the smartest person that you ever met. I’m not Einstein. But I’m the person that always thinks he gonna do something, and I think that’s the difference.” —Master P
Here it real-life street cred from today’s hottest rap and hip-hop stars. It’s advice and insight that’s straight up, from the folks who’ve been there.
“Love is everything in my book. You can have as much money as you want, but without love how happy can you be? Because if you try to buy it, it’s not real.” —Eve
“I’m not perfect. I’ve made a lot of mistakes and there’s a lot of things that I don’t know, but I’m not afraid to learn, and not afraid to say that I don’t know something.” —Foxy Brown
“I would take book smarts over street smarts if I had to make a choice. Book smarts could get you to be the CEO of a company, be like Donald Trump . . . I don’t know if street smarts could get you anywhere but jail. You can’t retire on street smarts but you can on book smarts.” —Ice T
“Don’t be no follower, man, ’cause you’ll go down fast. You gotta do things for yourself. Think for yourself. Know right from wrong. ’Cause that’s what I had to do. I had to learn right from wrong.” —Raekwon of Wu Tang Clan
I hate this book. A word to the author: if you are going to do something, do it right. Besides the foreward from KRS-One, it is all downhill from there.
This book is embarrassing to say the least. Here are some snippits directly taken from the book in the categories that the author should have made…
The meaningless quotes: “The people that respect you, respect you” – Mos Def “You have to be smart enough to know” – Eminem “My life is an expression of things” – Q-Tip
The most unoriginal quotations to ever be attributed to an individual: “Stay in School” – Raekwon “The Chef” of Wu Tang Clan (page 71) “Stay in school” – Cappadonna of Wu Tang Clan (page 149) “You can do anything you want” – Gza “The Genius” of Wu-Tang Clan “Keep your eye on the prize” – Ol’ Dirty Bastard from Wu-Tang Clan “Pray” – Dj Tony Touch “Everything happens for a reason…what don’t kill you can only make you stronger.” – Jay Z “Time heals all wounds” – Layzie Bone “Life is what you make it.” – Da Brat “Always be yourself” – Silkk the Shocker “Be original.”- Black Thought of the Roots
Words to live by: “Don’t never shit on your niggas. Always keep it tight, because more minds is better than one” – Drag On “If you got kids, you’ve got to back up a little bit. At some point you have to ask yourself, “If I ain’t here to raise them, who’s gonna raise them?” – Mack 10 “I don’t hang in the same places as before, because I’m on probation. I don’t need to get caught up in that shit.” – B.G of Cash Money Millionares “I definitely straightened my shit up after I got shot…so I turned it all around and started to go to school, got my little diploma and whatnot.” - Shyne “If I didn’t have some kind of education, I wouldn’t be able to count my money!” – Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot “Just say what you got to say in one ball and keep it moving.” – Pete Rock “There are three things you don’t change. You don’t change mechanics, doctors, or beauticians.” - MJG
Quotes of people quoting other people: “It’s all about doing what is meaningful, eventually; like KRS-One said, ‘Respect will outlast cash.’” Guru of Gang Starr
The author is obviously just a moron: “You need to know the foundations of anything” – EPMD “In every situation that’s worthwhile, you have to pay dues. You don’t always recognize that when it’s happening.” – Dilated Peoples “A loyal muthafucka is a nigga who appreciate, who don’t forget what somebody will do for them.” – Redman of the Wu-Tang Clan (Denise, EPMD and Dilated Peoples are groups, Redman is not a member of the Wu-Tang Clan)
Oh, and throw in some Mary J Blidge, Keisha, Macy Gray, Monica, Carl Thomas, Sole, and Jill Scott quotes in the book because they are black people so they must automatically be Hip-Hop??? And you may think I am kidding but there is a random quote from The Honorable Elijah Muhammad! WTF? When did his mixtape drop? I gotsta have it!
Lastly, try not to be confused when every 25 pages or so the author lists a citation of where the quote appeared. Actually, now that I thumb back through the book, the only citations are from Rebirth Magazine. Is this where the author works? I don't think anyone has ever read this book. Not even an editor.
I think this book had a lot of potential, but it fell flat. Why didn’t the author just quote the lyrics from their songs? Not enough to go around, or too much work? There were lines quoted from songs to introduce the subsections, but that was it. Something an artist puts on wax is something that they want to be known for, so for me, this was just a complete waste of time reading uncited quotes of something an artist may (or may not) have said in conversation or an interview or who knows?
And the last quote of the book, God only knows why it is in here, “No te rindas. Translation: Don’t give up. – A Spanish saying” Wow.
