This is a heartwarming look at the early days of North Dakota history. Rolfsrud put together a collection of incidents related to his initiating the collection of gopher tails by the Lutheran church where his father was the minister. The tails were turned in for bounty payment and the money used for an organ which would replace the accordion being used. It wasn't as simple a plan as was originally thought and Rolfsrud documents the story in a lively and entertaining manner.
I was particularly interested in the book because when I was in 4th or 5th grade I was selected by my school teacher to perform in a short skit based on the book. The skit had been written to promote "Library Week" (or month) and was to be broadcast on television! This was in the early 1950s when there was no video recording (movie film was used, of course) so it was a live performance broadcast on WDAY TV, channel 6, in Fargo. My most vivid memory of the event is the intensity of the studio lights and the heat they produced. And, of course, I was a little proud for having been selected. My dad was proud of me too. He found a friend with a TV set (he and mom didn't own one until I was in college) and set up his movie camera to record the performance.
Here is the sad part of the story: I didn't even read the book!! Well, not that I remember. So when I saw it for sale at the Hjemkomst Festival in Moorhead, Minnesota a couple years ago I bought it and read it more than 60 years after my TV acting debut. (I mean, wouldn't you think..... I mean...that's just pathetic!)

Post Script: My good friend Curt Eriksmoen has written a short article biography of Erling Rolfsrud:
