In this expository devotion of Genesis, you are guided verse by verse, word by word, of God’s redemptive plan. Genesis means beginning. It was not just the beginning of creation, but how sin thru Adam continues to take hold of our hearts and how God revealed himself to the world after the curse. It is important to have an understanding of God’s redemption for us or else we do not see a need for a savior and that we have a great God to worship.

For 40 days a passage is introduced and you are encouraged to get your “Favorite Bible” (I love that) and an encouraging word to the goodness of the word. Insights of these passages are discussed followed by 4 brief summaries. Major themes that will help you think theologically as you study the bible. Digging Deeper with Cross References to a particular theme like the Holy Spirit. Life Lessons that help you apply the passages studied. Last but not least, questions to reflect and journalize.

The devotion goes deep in the lives of Abram and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Esau, and ending with Joseph. In each, you encounter a for-shadow of Jesus and God’s character. You also encounter the weakness of each these biblical icons.

My favorite is Joseph. Joseph was more of complete type of Christ than any other person in the Old Testament. Both were the objects of special love by their fathers, both were hated and rejected by their brothers, both were rejected as rulers over their brethren, both were stripped of their robes, both were targets of conspiracy, both were betrayed and sold for silver, both were condemned even though innocent, and both were exalted to glory by God. (kindle loc 2563). Another great insight is the family dynamics shown in Joseph’s life. How his brothers hated him and in hating him, his brothers essentially hated their father. When we claim to love Jesus but hate the authority of God, we do not love Jesus. I also was encouraged how Joseph grieved over his brothers when they reunited. Joseph loved his brothers and tested them to see if their love was pure. In the same way, we are tested to see the purity of our love. What is our love rooted in. Is it rooted in self? Or is it rooted in something greater that is forever.

Truth does not change and will withstand anything contrary. Genesis is a great place to start in that journey.

The mistake I made was not discovering this book until I had almost finished reading Genesis. This book would definitely work better as it is intended to be read, alongside the reading of Genesis.

Each day of reading is broken up into clearly marked sections, which is very useful:

Scripture Reading and Insights
Major Themes
Digging Deeper with Cross-References
Life Lessons
Questions for Replection and Discussion

I particularly liked the Major Themes category, as I felt that helped to answer some of the questions I had regarding certain subjects covered in Genesis.

Life Lessons is a good section for anyone wanting to make use of what they have learnt through reading the Bible & incorporate it into their daily lives.

This book contains some interesting theories that attempt to explain certain things that take place in the Bible. It also helps to build a picture of what life was like during biblical times, so that I was able to put some of the stories into better context.

I received this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

40 Days Through Genesis is a supporting overview of the book of beginnings. It’s simple format gives a summary of each storyline covered in the first book of the bible, from the creation of the universe to Joseph’s last days.

I enjoyed this journey through the book of Genesis. It reiterates the wonderful discoveries of our universe, human nature, and ultimately our creator. It serves as a guide, giving a fresh look at sin and redemption, creation and destruction, life and death, the lineage of our Savior, and other foundational truths of the Bible.

The verses used are from ESV, NIV, NASB, and NKJV.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I didn’t get that much out of this, definitely not as much as I thought I would. I will put the blame on the difference in theological beliefs that the author and I have. I think that because of those differences I couldn’t take this book as seriously as I would have normally. I also didn’t enjoy it as much because I found myself arguing internally with the beliefs.
So the lesson is: a Bible devotional has to at least line up with your beliefs at least somewhat otherwise, you most likely won’t get anything out of it. That can be more detrimental than helpful.
