My daughter is a huge fan of Henry's Cat from her early days watching him on television so when I spotted this book I just had to get it her for a present, even though she is now aged ... well, never mind I'll let that secret remain!

The book contains full length stories, cartoon strips, puzzles and things to do and throughout HC cavorts with all his friends, Constable Bulldog, Douglas Dog, Mosey Mouse, Pansy Pig, Chris Rabbit, Myrtle the Cow, Farmer Giles, Sammy Snail, Denise Duck, Phillipe Frog and Ted Tortoise.

The main stories are 'The Magician'. 'The Funny Day', 'The Restaurant' and 'The Record' and in all of them HC takes centre stage with support from a variety of his pals. In the first he sees a television programme on magic and decides that he will become a magician. He buys a magic book, reads it and is ready for action, armed with the magic words 'Abracadabra sim sala bin'. The drama unfolds and HC decides that he is going to saw Chris Rabbit in half. He does so and the consequences are catastrophic, not to say gruesome! Fortunately after many hair-raising incidents HC is able to put Chris back together again. The pair celebrate by dining together when Chris says to HC, 'Just one more disappearing trick. Close your eyes.' And as HC does so, Chris eats all the ice cream!

'The Funny Day' is April Fools' Day and HC devises a number of tricks to play on his friends. Unfortunately they all go wrong, so wrong that HC gets on the wrong side of the law and Constable Bulldog has to lock him up and in the cell some of his tricks come back to haunt him.

HC has a dream of opening a travelling Catfood restaurant in 'The Restaurant' but it is failing until Douglas Dog and Pansy Pig offer him advice by telling him that he has to have music to accompany the diners while they are eating. He does so successfully and ends up saying, 'If music be the food of love, eat up!'

In 'The Record' he wants to break records as he has seen a television show on the subject. He recruits Douglas Dog, Mosey Mouse and Chris Rabbit to help with Ted Tortoise on the sidelines. One of his bizarre ideas involves stick anything glue and as a result HC finds himself in a compromising position swinging from a church tower ... and it is fun to see how he arrives there.

Cartoons are on 'Buried Treasure' and 'The Number System' and in the latter HC, after a series of surprising events, once more finds himself on the wrong side of Constable Bulldog.

Bob Godfrey and Stan Hayward have produced a great fun-packed story book for young (and old) and I can quite easily see how my daughter and all the other fans fell in love with Henry's Cat.
