We can be in danger of no longer really understanding the meaning of the Lord's Prayer simply because it is heard and spoken so often. Edgar illustrates the depth of the prayer as he shows it in the original context, and shows what that means for us in our context today and in the future. The Lord's Prayer defines our faith and defines the Biblical worldview.
William Edgar (DTheol, University of Geneva) is professor of apologetics and coordinator of the apologetics department at Westminster Theological Seminary. His books include Reasons of the Heart, The Face of Truth, and Truth in All Its Glory.
A really helpful little book which not only recognises the prayerful value of the Lord’s Prayer, but also it’s creedal value. I thought the author did a great job of giving a detailed exposition of each line of the Lord’s Prayer in a wider biblical context. By having a deeper understanding of what the Lord’s Prayer is saying, the more likely we are to pray it, and also really feel it, when we are praying it. I found the author’s style of writing a little hard to follow at times, but all in all it is a great book. If you’re looking for a book to read about the Lord’s Prayer, I would for sure recommend it!
There are a lot of great books on the Lord’s prayer out there. This volume looks at the prayer as a lens for life, and applies the prayer to many situations we don’t normally think of when we think of this prayer. Edgar at times dives into apologetics to prove his points. This book is a useful addition to the larger collection and the Lord’s prayer.
Edgar's basic thesis is that the Lord's Prayer is praying for the world as it ought to be. But more than that, it is the means (or one of the means) by which the transformation of the world will come. I found Edgar's exegesis at times to be quite illuminating. The first three chapters set the stage for the rest of book as Edgar lays out the role of the Kingdom of God. The rest of the book covers each petition of the Lord's Prayer. Anyone wanting to study the Lord's Prayer would benefit from this book.
