All the events and characters in this book are real. Only one of the four friends who had resolved to escape from the USSR and flee to the USA managed to get to America after they were all detained in 1974 on the territory of Finland and returned to the Soviets. What awaited them? For their desire to be free, to live in another country, they faced trials, labor camps, and psychiatric hospitals where they met people with various amazing and tragic fates. Thirty years later, the author (the only one fortunate to realize his dream and live in the USA) returned with a camera crew to Finland, Karelia and Ukraine to recall those events and meet the still-surviving witnesses of everything that happened.
