While nowhere near as shocking as the first book "Payback is a Mutha" this did have its moments. I think that Wahida Clark has decided that Payback is either going to be a Trilogy or a recurring series, and this felt like a middle book. Like stuff was just happening to set up some other stuff to happen later on down the road.

I only rate it two stars because I was expecting a LOT more craziness to happen, or at least craziness to be described. It's like she made most of the insane moments, that fueled my interest in the first book, happen off-scene. Total copout.

Wahida, bring the crazy. We like the crazy. It's why we read you.

(FROM JACKET)She lost her integrity, her best friend...and nearly wound up dead. Now Shan is making her move, far away from Memphis's mean streets, to wipe the slate clean and start over. But she can't hold back what she's feeling for Briggen, a wealthy drug dealer who wants her to be his one and only for life. Her brother, Peanut, can't afford to lose her-or the one shot he has at getting back on top of the drug game. And the ruthless convict who tricked Shan into loving him is out of lockdown...and out to settle lethal scores with her and Peanut. Now, with everything at stake and a vicious turf war taking no prisoners, Shan must put it all on the line to save her future-or die trying.

This was a good book. Not one of her best books, but a page turner. I think the problem was there were just way too many characters. I read her other books a few years ago and this one came out too late. I don't remember if the other books had this many characters, but if they did, it would have probably been better if this one would have come out sooner. I'm still a really big fan of hers...She definitely left room for another one and I will be picking that one up when it comes out.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get anymore twisted. More people began to fall like a domino effect. And at the end Nick decides to show up, so much for having Peanut’s back smh...or maybe he knew peanut was sleeping with Brianna too. Nick hasn’t been around since part 1. Forever got exactly what he deserved and Nyla is stupid for sticking by him again after he wasn’t out of jail for 24 hours before he was back in prison for murder & paralyzed from the neck down. It’s crazy!! I can’t even imagine what is going to happen next in part 3.

I like this book for the most part but I ended up being confused half the time with the intertwining of all the characters and trying to remember the 1st book and what happened there to pull it all together in this book. The author did a decent job of pulling it together and that helped a lot.
I am not off this book enough to not continue with the series because there are a few questions that I would like to have answered.

I took a while to finish, but everytime I started I had to keep reading. The ending was definitely not what I had expected. Wahdia knows how to keep you guessing in this one. I should have started with book 1.

Payback With Ya Life by Wahida Clark is the anticipated sequel to Payback is a Mutha which found Shan in the grips of conflict after conflict. Being an educator in the prison system is hard enough, but when you add pregnancy and drug smuggling to the equation, the end result is catastrophic. As Shan played the role of crooked teacher, the ends justified the means if it meant her brother, Peanut, would be set free and able to re-establish himself in the dope game. After it was all said and done, she planned to leave Memphis, Tennessee to head for Detroit, Michigan, in hopes of a new start.

Peanut had plans to return deep in the drug world but how could he when Shan continued to make bad decisions? From being pregnant by a married man to not dealing with the grief caused by a friend who committed suicide, would he really be able to be successful in all he wanted to accomplish while being her step-in father? Not to mention he had old debts to cash-in on that would definitely lead to bloodshed with the possibility of Shan being a victim.

Wahida Clark has done it again. She created a tale with believable characters, unexpected plot twists, and even threw in a little homo-thug loving for dessert. It was well-written and it did not have too many characters to keep up with; which has been the case in her past novels. The ending left it open for a third installment but it was not the usual cliff hanger. The major conflict was resolved and I did not feel cheated. I recommend Payback With Ya Life to all urban fiction fans.

I preface this review by stating I listened to this book on audio and it may have altered how the story was received. Like it or not congratulations to Ms. Clark, Ms. Lee and the WCP team for continuing to put out work.

Narration-The harsh, yell and often times, high pitched delivery of the audio made this an extremely tough listen. I was skeptical once I saw who would be narrating this book. As the same narrator made listening to Thug Luv a very hard listen. I see that now this is the narrator’s style and I will shy away from audio delivered by them for now atleast. Where’s Cary Hite, Mr. Gates, Honey Jones, Diana Luke or Simi Howe?

Story-Much of the story was lost on me due to poor narration. However, I did not go back and listen to what I could have missed because I just wanted to finish the book. I was not clear on the chemistry between the characters that were “feeling” each other as they were not developed in a way that made it transparent. I was 3 hours in and was not sure what the plot was for this installment. This is not Ms. Clark’s best series. But, I am one of those that likes to see things to the end unless it is just completely intolerable. On to book 3

Consequences

Pregnant by a married man and having lost her best friend to suicide, Shan doesn't know if she's coming or going. With the support of her brother, Peanut, and a new man in her life, things are looking up. What goes up must come down. Old scores have a way of rejuvenating themselves. Someone wants payback in the worse way.

PAYBACK WITH YA LIFE was a bit of a slow read compared to its predecessor, Payback Is A Mutha. At times it was hard to get a good grasp of the characters because they weren't really fleshed out in this book. Curious as to know how things would turn out, PAYBACK WITH YA LIFE held my attention but this was definitely not a page turner, which is what I'm used to with Wahida Clark's books. The elements that characterized her early material (drama, thug loving, good character development and great dialogue) aren't evident here. I know Wahida is with a new publishing company, which I'm sure was a good move for her, but I'm wondering if they had too much say in this story.

"Payback With Ya Life" is the sequel to "Payback is a Mutha." It starts off with Shan still coping with her bestfriend Brianna's suidcide, she's pregnant by a married man who's in prison, and she have nobody to turn to. Shan feels as if her best bet is to move to Detroit and start over but her brother Peanut, a major drug dealer, have hits against him. The people who are after him are willing to do anything and everything to get him so Shan's life is at sake also. The father wants nothing to do with the baby and woman of the married man is also out to get Shan too. There's a lot of set-ups in this book and surprising moments. I personally liked it better than "Payback is a Mutha" because it so suspenseful that it'll keep you wondering about what's going to happen next but what happens is always unexpected. I would certainly recommend this book to a friend because it is good read.

I am actually reading this out of order, should have read "Payback is a Mutha" but since I rented this from the library I am reading it first. It's starting out Ghetto already so I am sure I will be finished with this in 3 days or less.

Well I am finished and I can say this was a roller coaster ride from the beginning to the end. Wahida had quite a few characters and I really was trying to keep up with who did what to who, but it was a lot of street action and plenty of drama. It was your typical hood, prison, gang action. Not going to go into the names because as previously stated there are too many to mention. I am giving this two stars because there are so many loop holes.

Awww man,

When you say, "payback is a mutha" they mean it but when you say, "Payback with ya life" its even worse... Forever got what he deserved, so did Skye, Doc, Tami, Woo, Sharia, Shadee, and Peanut's jump offs. If you ask me Born had so much respect for Shadee it killed him inside when Janay told him that especially because Shadee was a hypocrite about sleeping with men.

Shan finally found her man and got what she deserve 3 nice well maintained businesses, a family with Briggen, and revenge to the man who ended her brother's, Peanut, life. After losing her only family, she grew strong.

I can't wait to read the next book :)

Shan, Forever, Peanut, and Briggen are back at it once again. Shan is trying to get as far away from Forever as possible, but at the same time finds herself falling for Briggen. Briggen has hopes of getting Shan to be another one of his women to run one of his businesses, while Forever just wants his revenge on everyone. Peanut is up to his old antics running around sleeping with women, getting money, and trying to control Shan. This was another fast paced, revenge filled read by Wahida. I would definitely recommend it because it's a BANGER!!!!
